year-old brother-in-law arrived
from his home in Europe Thurs
day for a visit, and naturally he
was interested in seeing Ameri
can television, especially because
he is studying English.
Out of curiosity, therefore, I
scanned the story-lines of the
shows that the networks had to
offer him Thursday night. I only
surveyed the programs that end
ed before 10 o'clock, because that
is when he goes to bed. And I
thought you might be interested
in some of the plots that made
up the bulk of the schedule, all
of which were repeats:
"Dr. Kildare." A beautiful,
and pregnant young woman
dreads having her first baby.
"Perry Mason." The rivalry
for an executive promotion in an
investment firm leads to black
mail and murder.
"Twilight Zone." The care-

law instead of going into show

"Leave It To Beaver." A girl
cancels her movie date because
she has to stay home with her
younger sister, and there is an
attempt to overcome this prob
lem.
"My Three Sons." Pushing to
pack for a business trip, Fred
MacMurray's sacroiliac goes out,
leaving him helpless. When he
tries to get his doctor, he learns
that the physician has become an
obstetrician and cannot leave an
office full of expectant mothers.

After 30 years of traveling the
length and breadth of the United
Stales playing one-night stands,
Welk finally has managed to slay
pretty much in one place, South
ern California.
During the summer he will ac
cept such dates as the Milwau
kee Fair, the Chicago music fes
tival and a three-week stand at
Lake Tahoe. But that is the ex
tent of it.
His weekly ABC-TV show and
Iwice-wcekly dance fests at the
Hollywood Palladium keep him
busy enough right at home.
Additionally, millionaire Welk
drives to his own office building
every morning at 7:30 (or a full
day s work on his various corpor
ations, which include music pub
lishing firms and a prospering
real estate business.
His sparkling ne.v high-rise of
fice building fronls on Wilshire
Boulevard and is only a few min
utes drive from his Brentwood
home.
Welk has been married tn his
wife. Fern, lor U years. The Welk
children are grown and have left
the net. Daughtcis Donna Lee

rage where Welk manages to put
in a few hours work in the eve
ning.
The musician-. design for mod
est living precludes servants. Mrs.
W'elk does all the house work and
cooking. Because her husband has
a stomach ailment she must keep
the meals simple and plain.
The couple's one luxury is a
four bedroom home in Palm
Sprincs which they frequently
loan to friends. It has a snim-
minq pool.
Each Sunday morning Welk can
he seen driving the lew blocks
from his home to St. Martin's
Catholic Church in Westwood. Es
sentially a religious man. Welk's
reading is almost limited to phil
osophy and looks on religion.
Furthermore, Welk is a combi
nation big brother-father confes
sor for the members of his hand.
In addition o his other activi
ties Welk keeps a clo.'e eve on
the direction and musical com
ponents of his show. He works
lonj hours perfecting the various
arrangements that eventually are
heard and seen on the air.
His clothes are piain and solid
colored for television. But when
he is on the golf course Welk fie
quently is flashily dressed in pas
tel trousers and bright sweaters
In person Welk is more relaxed
and personable than he appears
on the air. He has a limited fund
of small la Ik. preferring to lislen
than gab.

century naval hero, Horafio Hornblower, smokes a
wenfieth-century cigarette during a break in the shoot
ing of the feature to be seen on Premiere on Thursday,
Aug. 15.

Speaking was Collier Young,
producer of C S. Forester's
Hornblower to he seen on the
Alcoa Premiere summer pro
gram Thursday, Aug. 15, from 10-
11 p.m., NYT over ABC-TV.

was backstage at the Aldwych
Theatre in London where Buck
was appearing nightly with the
Royal Shakespeare Theatre.
Young, an American who
had
lone cherished a dream to turn
Forester's lamed series of books
and short stories into a television
drama, was in England to set
production.

blower." Young and director John New
land had seen more than fifty
British actors and tested ten of
them before the fateful night that
they went to the Aldwych "and
dinned for Buck."
After the show they rushed
backstage so quickly that
young actor was still in the
pro
cess of removing his heavy make
up.

After two tests. Buck was signed
for the Alcoa Premiere role one
of the dramatic plums of the
1962-63 season.
"He's 26, tall, blue-eyed,
brown-haired, and very hand
some," reports Young. "More
than that he's a fine actor care
fully trained in the best British
tradition."
And if you believe in portents
here's another one. On the way
up, Buck understudied two other
members of the Royal Shakes
peare Company Albert Finney
and Peter O'Tooie.
"And you know," says Young,
"magic works three times . . ."
