SPEECH WINNERS Malm Junior High School speech students placed first again
last year in speech competition with Altamoot, Henley and Chiloquin schools. It was
the tenth year for Malin to place first. The winninq team consists of, seated left to

Brooks, story-telling; standing, Richard Takacs, radio; Riley Wilson, radio; Jeanne

Sevenly five teachers of highi
school honors classes in Oregon
are attending luo Advanced
Placement Institutes at the Uni
versity of Oregon from Aug. 4
to 16.
i The Imo - week training insti
tutes in English and American his-;
lory are designed to strengthen
the backgrounds of the high
school teachers who instruct ad
vanced placement courses in the
high schools of the state.
Participating teachers will ei
ther be teaching advanced place-1
ment courses in the high schools,
or will be using advanced place
ment materials and methods in
honors courses.
The high school advanced place
ment program oilers freshman
college level work to superior
students. Those who successfully
complete the program and tests
credit for their work when they
enter college.
The summer institute program
for teachers is in its fourth year
in Oregon. It began in ISfiO with
two three-day institutes in Ameri
can history and English held at
the University of Oregon. In 11
the institutes were lengthened to
two weeks. An institute in Eurn-
pean history was added to the
program in 12 and the Ameri
can history institute was held at
Reed College.
The uroaiam this year includes
the two current institutes at the
University of Oregon and an ear
lier institute in European history
held at Reed College.
The institute program is di
rected by the Oregon Council on
Advanced Placement, and t h e
University of Oregon acts as host
institute. It is financed by a grant
to the Slate Department of Ed
ucatinn from Ihe Fund (or (he
the Ford Foundation. All instruc
tional costs and half the mainte
nance of participants ale provid
ed through the grant.
Sixly-lwn teachers are enrolled
in the English institute, which
includes work in poetry, fiction
drama, and composition for Ad
vanced Placement tests.
