If you don't approve of the bid
ding of today's hand you won't
have an argument from me. The
hand was constructed by Jose
Le Dcntu, a French writer as a
problem to play.
Of course, if West opens a
pade there is no problem in
play, but West opens the cix of
trumps.
At this point South can make
the hand against any defense and
I will devote tomorrow's article
to this double dummy play, but
the first problem is to find out
the best line of play if you flic
actually at the table playing the
hand normally.
If East holds the king of clubs
you can make 12 tricks easily,
so the normal play is to lead
dummy's ace of clubs and con
tinue with the queen. Unfortu
nately for your purposes East
plays low.
You discard and West wins the
trick with the king. Now if he
leads a spade you go down two,
but you have worked out a neat
bit of camouflage. Your discard
on tlio queen of clubs was the
nine of diamonds. West Is pretty
sura that his partner holds an
ace. It now appears that it Is tlie
ace of diamonds eo he leads a
diamond whereupon you take the
rest of the tricks because you can
discard two spades on clubs and
one spado on the king of dia

President Kennedy refused to
day to take a public stand on one
of the most important questions
before him: Will his wife's baby
this month be a boy or girl?
In 1960, two months prior to
the birth of their son John Jr,
Kennedy boldly predicted they
would have a boy.
Newsmen had asked in Wash
ington several days ago whether
Iho President was making any
forecasts about their third child,
and the query was repeated at
the weekend White House where
there was nothing much else to
ask.
While House Press Secretary.
Pierre Salinger, smiling, said he
had taken the mailer up with the
President, and the spokesman as
soiled:
"He is going to confine himself
lo such predictions in election
years.
"Does this mean there is going
to be another baby next year?"

why don't you build an overgrown
ski ramp with a half-mile slant
at the right end?"
If Harry's suggestion is ignored
and U.S. scientists continue to
fire rockets in the old-fashioned
straight-up manner, some atten
tion might be given to the matter
of all that black smoke that cov
ers the pad at blast-off, says Lu
ther W. of Charleston, S.C.:
"Why don't you put giant fans
to one side of the launching pad?
Then when you shoot your mis
siles off, the smoke would be
blown away so you could see what
is going on."
There is a suspicion, Luther,
that sometimes they would just
as soon not see what is going on.
Cape Canaveral has its bad days.
Grownups might be inclined to
snicker at these youthful ideas.
But the U.S. Navy once spent
three years trying to figure out
how to use corn-eating pigeons to
steer guided missiles. The Navy
learned a lot about pigeons, in
cluding their inability to guide
rockets.
