Perhaps the one characteristic
that separates the good player
from the average player is that
tlie good player is always care

is so normal that anyone would
arrive at it. The opening lead
of the jack of spades is just as
normal and South has to win the
trick.
It also should not take South
any time at all to see that it is
up to him to attack the diamond
suit, so he leads a low diamond
toward dummy. If West rises
with the ace South will have no
further problems, but West will
play the seven and dummy's jack
will hold that trick.
High here is where the sheep
and the goats are separated. The
careless player will lead the queen
of diamonds from dummy. West's
ace will capture the trick and
from then on South will be strug
gling with a lost cause. He will
never be able to make more Ulan
eight tricks.
The careful player will lead a
spade back to his own hand and
a second diamond toward dummy.
West will have to play his ace,
but instead of capturing the queen
he will merely pick up the deuce.
South will make three diamond
tricks and his contract.

Increase In Job Rolls
Nears 71 Million Hark
WASHINGTON fUPD - The
number of jobs held by Ameri
cans climbed close to 71 million
in July to reach another all-time
high, the Labor Department an
nounced today.
Employment increased by 532,
000 to 70,851,000 in a better-than-seasona
gain.
Unemployment tell by 524,000 to
4,322,000 in line with the usual
July trends.
The department said the big
jump in jobs was concentrated
among teen agers and young
adults under 24.
It was the second consecutive
month that employment has sur
passed 70 million, a milestone in
U.S. economic history.
The nation's key unemployment
rate fell from 5.7 per cent of the
labor force to 5.6 per cent last
month. This indicates that 56 out
of every 1,000 persons looking for
a Job could not find one.

J. J. Willis, assistant superintend
ent of Shasta division. Southern
Pacific Company, to superintend
ent of transportation for the South
ern Pacific system v. as announced
Wednesday.
Willis has been assistant super
intendent of Shasta division for
the past two years, and he and
Mrs. Willis will move to San Fran
cisco where he will begin his new
assignment at once.
He has been employed by South
ern Pacific since 1944.
H. J. Kerins of Watsonville will
be the new assistant superintend
ent of Shasta division. He is be
ing promoted from trainmaster on
the Coast division.
