day.
He had taken his last trip the
day before over the rugged trail
to the newly completed lookout
building atop Black Butte. With
the same surefooted ease that
had made him a favorite of Sac
ramento district personnel in the
Shasta Trinity National Forest,
he transported Mildred Weston of
Corning to her lookout assignment
over two and a half miles of steep
rocky trail.
Bob Gray, fire control officer on
tlie Sacramento district, termed
Tony's death a tad blow to many
Forest Service employes, both ac
tive and retired.
Tony first went to work for the
Forest Service on the McCloud
District 21 years ago and was
ti ansfcrred to the Mount Shas
ta headquarters in 1930. He sup
plied lookout stations. He worked
on trail maintenance. He carried
spray equipment to fight pest
weeds on grazing permit areas.
According to Gray, Tony was
familiar with every phase of na
tional forest work. He often led
the mule train into the woods
with supplies to fight remote fires
before the days of air tanker
planes and smoke jumpers. He
even promoted fire prevention
in the forest by participating in
local parades long before this job
was taken over by Smokcy, the
Bear.
Tony was a saddle horse, too
and many Forest Service look
outs saw their posts for live first
time coming up the trail on
Tony's back.
A rash of fires over the week
end prevented proper rites for
Tony. Plans to bury the big bay
horse near the Black Butte cor
ral were deferred when the bull
dozer and men were needed
elsewhere to protect and preserve
tlie fire-trealened timoer on the
district. Tony had to be hauled
away.
"Tony was a real trooper,"
Gray said. "We'll miss his Rom
an nose. ;
