Ringworm, Skin Attacks
Require Exacting Care

Q Is ringworm primarily a fun
gus condition or a blood condi
tion? How can I get rid of it? Is
it tlie same as athlete's foot?
A Ringworm is a fungus dis
ease that may attack any part of
the skin but it has a marked pref
erence for parts that are moist.
Kor this reason it is common in
the groin and in the feet w here it
is called athlete's loot. Many per
sons who are not in the least ath
letic also got it. A new fungicide,
chloroxylcnol, has proved very
effective in some persons who!
have used it.
Recent studies indicate that in
some persons rod-shaped bacteria
rather than a fungus cause ath
lete's foot. This would account lor
the failure of some victims to get
relief from any of the fungicides
and for their cure by other drugs.
It all boils down to what I have
said many times in the past: First,
find the exact cause. When this is
done the treatment prescribed by
your doctor is olten surprisingly
easy. But always, you must keep
your feet as dry as possible as
much of the time as possible.
Q Kor several weeks I have
had a salty taste in my mouth
I've checked with my dentist and
have used different kinds of
mouthwash uut nothing seems to
help. What could cause this?
A This rather baffling symptom
is observed in some persons who
smoke excessively. If you smoke
try cutting it out for four or five
weeks and see whether the salty
taste disappears. Cutting out
smoking will give you other divi
dends as well. On the otherhand,
the tsate may be due to an acid sa
liva in contact with an amalgam
filling, but such a cause would
have been discovered by your den
tist. In a few .persons sleeping
with the mouth open is associat
ed with a sally taste.
If you arc taking medicines that
contain ammonium or calcium
chloride, sodium or potassium io
dide, or sodium bicarbonate, this
could be the cause. If you are not
taking any of these try cutting
down or eliminating table salt
from your diet for a week and see
if that will not help you.
Q What would cause me to feel
pain in a leg that was taken off
10 years ago?
A Nearly every person who has
an amputation has some painful
sensation in the severed ending
of the nerve that supplied the lost
leg. This is called phantom leg
pain. In most persons this clears
up in a few months. Operations
to lurther remove sensory path
ways to or in the brain have been
attempted when the pain is persis
tent and severe, but the results
are often disappointing.

Plastic Contact Lens Brings New Life To Many

tiny piece of plastic has brought
a new life to a baton-twirling
beauty queen, a jet pilot who
logs continuous hours in a B32,
and a Negro porter who once
could see only a hand before his
face.
They are a few of more than
550 persons throughout the coun
try who are wearing a new type
contact lens.
The Pupilcns. a variation of the
much-used contact lens, was de
veloped by Memphis optometrist
Dr. Irving P. Filderman. The tiny
leyepiece rests on the lower lid
of tlie eye. unlike its bigger broth
er, and covers only 35 per cent of
the cornea compared to the 89
per cent covered by the contact.
Because (lie lens is separated
from tlie upper lid, Filderman
says, there is a decrease of pres
sure on tlie cornea, increasing
comfort and lessening chances of
the Pupilens becoming dislodged.
Beauty Queen Leads Way
A striking brunette led the en-:
terprising optometrist to tlie Pu
pilcns. Rita Wilson, Miss Tennessee of
lust and Miss Dixie of I'M, had
been Filderman's patient since she
was 13, and was virtually the first
one he fitted with the Pupilens.
"With Rita, we had the chal
lenge of retaining perfect appear
ance and offering a stability in
tlie lens that would allow her to
participate with ease in beauty
contests and twirling exhibitions,"
Filderman said.
Rita wore her Pupilenses (or the
first time about two weeks before
she entered the Miss Dixie con
test in Daytona Beach, Fla.
"Not only did she adapt well
to the Ions," Filderman said, "but
she won tlie contest."
