spontaneous "strike" for higher
silver salmon prices Wednesday
when most buyers agreed to pay
32 cents per pound.
The packers also raised chinook
prices two cents to 37 cents for
small, 47 cents for medium and
67 cents for large fish.
Many fishermen at Coos Bay,
Newport and Florence returned to
the sea Wednesday and the rest
planned to go out this morning.

Tlie fishermen agreed to tie up
their boats last week when the
price for silvers hung at 25 cents
a pound without rising when the
fish became larger, as it had in
past years.
Estimates Varied
Estimates of the number of
boats laying in at the height of
the tie-up varied widely, but Leon
ard Hall, member of the Oregon
Fish Commission, set the figure
at about 90 per cent of the 3,000
licensed boats along the coast.
Other estimates were as low as
600.
Wright said the break came in
fishermen's meetings at Westport,
Wash.. Monday and Tuesday when
Bay Fish Co. of Seattle ottered
32 cents per pound.
He said representatives of the
fishermen then approached Bum
ble Bee's outlying stations at
Newport, Florence and llwaco,
Wash., with tlie Bay offer.

proposal for a more flexible pro
gram to admit immigrants to the
United Stales.
The President proposed Tues
day what would amount to an an
nual "world quota" plan to re
place the 39-year-old "national or
igins" system that restricts the
number ot immigrants irom any
one country to a specific quota.
Kennedy said tliat tlie present
immigration law was discrimina
tory and "without basis in either
logic or reason." Ho asked that
it be phased out over a five-year
period.
The administration's long-awaited
proposal was received with lit
tle fanfare by a Congress pre
occupied with such high-priority
problems as the railroad labor
dispute, civil rights and tax reduction.

Committee, introduced the ad
ministration bill with a warm en
dorsement Tuesday.
