Suit Filed
PORTLAND (UPI) - A $200,000
libel suit was filed here Friday
byia Portland Negro against City
Cofnmissioner Stanley Earl.
It claimed William Roy Carr, a
former city fireman, was unjustly
named as a thief in a statement
made by Earl Wednesday that the
city once employed a Negro lire-
man "but he stole some equip
ment and we let mm so.
The suit said that Carr was the
only Negro ever employed as a
city fireman. It claimed the state
ment was false and defamatory
and "tended to expose the plain
tif to public hatred, contempt
and ridicule.
Carr, who worked for Uie Port
land Fire Bureau from 1952 to
19S7, seeks $100,000 general dam
ages and $100,000 punitive dam
ages.
