HERALD AND
Heartiest congratulations are in
order for the Klamath Falcons.
They proved Thursday night that
Medford is not invincible as they
rapped the visiting team 4-0 to
garner the Southern Division Area
American Legion title.
The Falcons had lost two pre
vious contests, but came through
in style Thursday with flying col
ors. Gary Benson was superb, al
though a little wild at times, and
his bat was crammed full of base
hits as he also led the team in
that category.
Benson hurled a neat two-hitter
but he also had tome great Held'
Ing behind him. Levey Young,
the Falcon shortstop, Is proving
to be a very valuable asset for
the Falcons, His quick hands and
rifle arm have been the pivot
ing point for tho double play. He
was in on two of the three dou'
ble killings in the game, relaying
throws to first from second Back
er Lanny Guycr.
The Falcons will play the win
ner of the North Bend-Brookings
Friday night game sometime be
fore tile 24th of July. The winner
of tho best two-of-threo series
there meets Rosoburg in another
best two-oMhrea sot to be fin
ished by July '30.,
Perhaps we've some future
Olympians around the area. The
Klamath Basin Athletic Associa
tion's bi-weekly track meets at
Modoc Field have been proving
that tlie track interest - is high
around this area with many par
ticipants and some fine times (or
tlie younger kids.
But there should be more high
school aged entrants. What Is
wiring with those aged lads and
lussca? Aro they too lazy to get
out and compete? Sure, some
work. But the . meets don't be
gin until 5:30. Those that 'are
Interested In high school track
during tlie season should especial
ly be there. It doesn't matter
that your favorite events might
not be run off that day. Per'
haps competing In a few differ
ent events will produce a dCcalh-
Ion champ soniedny. So how
about some more older aged
groups getting out and compel.
Ing and showing the way for the
very eager younger set? ,
The Brosterhous family, which
apparently is a very athletic set,
is out In full lorce every meet
ana doing rather well lor tlieirv
selves. The family is full of boys,
but the boys' sister Is pushing
them out of tlie headlines. She
turned in a very good time in t lie
440-yard dash with a clocking of!
1:19.5. 1 no record of the Emer
ald Empire Athletic Association
is 1:22.2 for 9-10-year-old girls.
And she wasn't even pushing her-
self or being pushed by another
runner.
We tried lo find out if tliat
was somewhere, near a national
record or any other but came up
with nothing. Tlie Eugene Register-Guard
had nothing but tlie
EEAA records on such a race at
that age. But there Is one tiling
tor sure, she is a fine track
prospect If she keeps it up. She
is a 10-year-old girl with hardly
any track form at all, no coaching
except what she gels from her
brothers. But tlie raw material
for a fine woman track star
is there. There Is more such lal
ent In tlie area and Die KRAA
hopes to develop this talent. That
is tlie reason for such a club
and such a program.
Tlie big fight is tomorrow night.

To Push Fight
Meanwhile, Patterson, despite
the Chicago debacle, has indicat
ed in his workouts that he plans
to take the biggest gamble of his
career and carry the fight right
into the "Bear s paws. Patterson
will depend upon his own speed
and punch to blast down Sonny
just as he did Sweden's Jo
hansson in their second and third
fights, after Ingemar had taken
the title from Flovd on a third-
round kayo in 1959.
Some writers recalled that even
whfn Sonny suffered his lone de
feat by Marty Marshall in 1954.
Marshall broke Sonny's jaw but
could not put him down and had
to be satisfied with a decision.
Liston never lias been stopped
nor floored in his 35 fights.
Although Las Vegas has had
eight title fights during the past
three years, this will be its first
heavyweight championship. How
ever, the Silver Stale had three
other heavyweight title, bouts:
boo ruzsimmons - Jim Corbett
at Carson City in 1897; Marvin
Hart . Jack Root at Reno in 1905
and Jack Johnson-Jim Jeffries at
Reno in 1910.
Patterson seeks his 39lh victory
in -42 fights,, which include 29
knockouts anil three defeats by
Johansson. Joey Maxim (decision i
