Kings Meant
To Force Aces
By OSWALD JACOBY

South arrived at lour hearts on
what is usually described as "Poppa-Momma"
bidding, but t h e r c
was nothing "Poppa - Momma"
about this play.
Mot people would have wound
up down one and complaining
about losing both diamond finess
es, but Sonny Moyse, the editor
of Bridge World magazine, played
the hand as if he wanted to use it
in an article.
Actually there was nothing com
plicated about the play. Sonny
played a low club from dummy at
trick one. East won with the
jack and led the five of spades
and right here is where Sonny
came up with a play to distin
guish the men from the boys.
He covered the five with his
king. West won with the ace and
returned the jack. Sonny played
dummy's queen and, when East
followed with the four spot, Son
ny's worries were over. He drew
trumps and lost a club finesse
to East's king, but East did not
have a spade to lead and even
tually Sonn got rid of his last
.spade on the long club in dum
my. " Sonny's play would not have
succeeded against a 6-1 spade
break, but neiither would the nlay
of a low spade provided West
came up with the correct defen
sive play.

Single Women Not
Always 'Willing'
By ANN LAM.KKS
Dear Ann Landers: When will
otherwise intelligent people learn
that a single woman, living alone,
1 is not necessar
ily desperate.
wretched and
crazy to snag a
man?
As a young di
vorcee I'm furi
ous with "big
hearted" -friends
and relatives
w ho hand out my
name and telephone number w ith
out permission. And I shudder
when well-meaning clods intro
duce me as "available, unat
tached" arid "foot-loose and fan
cy free." In other words "will
ing, ready and eager." These
clucks never consider the xssi-
bilitv that . I just might have
friends of my own, or perhaps a
plan or two.
My job is interesting. I enjoy
the world of books and music.
I'm my own cook and housekeep
er, in addition to Holding a itm
time job. There's no time to be
lonely I resent the creeps who
call and assume I'm thrilled to
hear a male voice from the out
side world.-SELF-SUFFIClENT
Dear Sclf-Sulficient: It's good to
know that some solo females are
content and 'self-sufflrient." I
hope you realize how fortunate
you arc.
Most bachelor girls, divorcees
and widows would he delighted
to hear a male voice from the
outside world, I know, because
(hey tell me.
Dear Ann Landers: My husband
and I differ on a vital issue
Each of (is feels the other is dead
wrong, sb there is no chance of a
compromise. We've agreed to
write this letter together and ac
cept your decision.
,Iay listens in on my conversa
tions on the extension phone. He
frequently goes through my purse
He opens letters addressed to me
if he gets to the mail first. I
resent this and have told him so.
He says I am off base, that
marriage should mean total shar
ing, that there should be 110 sc
crels. He insists mat when peo
ple have nothing to hide they do
not resent being "listened in on"
or having their mail read first.
He has said repeatedly. "I
wouldn't mind at all if you did
the same thing to me."
Well, I never would because I
wasn't brought up that way. I
can't eavesdrop, or look in some
one ele s wallet, or read then-
mail. I'd feel like a sneak thief.
Please settle this in the column
Thank you. - DIFFERENT
WOKLDS
Dear Worlds: Intercepting mail,
listening in on phune conversa
tions ajtrl going through a purse
is not "sharing" it's spying.
A solid marriage it buill on oin
fidenre and trust. Snooping and
eavesdropping sullen-ale the sense
of mutual confidence that is es
sential to a healthy relationship.
Dear Ann Landers: Compared
with some of the problems people
write to you about mine is noth
ing, but I notice that sometimes
you print letters from people who
are just annoyed. Well, that'sme.
I have lost my third good foun
tain pen since Christmas simply
because I let someone use it "for
minute."
Is it possible that people carry
off fountain pens accidentally?
It's hard to believe a person
doesn't realize the pen isn't his
when he puts it in his pocket
or in her purse.
Is there some way I can hang
on to my next fountain pen short
of refusing lo let anyone borrow
it? I hate to say no to such a
simple request but I can't afford
these losses.-NO PLUMA
Dear No: The solution is so ,
simple I'll bet you'll wonder why
you never thought of it yourself.!
When you lend your fountain
pen keep the cap. No one would
put a pen in a pocket or purse
with the cap off. (Obviously, this
advice won't work for ball points
without caps.)
If alcohol is robbing you or
someone you love of health and
dignity, send for Ann Landers'
booklet, "Help For the Alcoholic,"
enclosing with your request 20
cents in coin and a long, self-addressed,
stamped envelope.
Ann Landers will be glad to
help you with your problems.

PORTLAND IPI' - The first
Cardiac Telemetry Station on the
West Coast and one of the first in
I he world was opened at St. Vin
cent Hospital here Wednesday.
The station uses new "dynamic
electro-cardiographic" equipment
uhich is available at only five in
stitutions in the world, including
Cape Canaveral and the World
Health Organization in Switzer-
'and.
The new equipment makes it
possible to obtain by tape record
ing complete uninterrupted rec
ords of heart actions of active pa
tients continuously over long peri
ods of time and without supervi
sion.
Such information has previously
been unobtainable.
The equipment will be used in
research projects aimed al earlier
diagnosis of heart disease and
prevention of crippling and fatal
heart attacks.
Experts say that such research
studies may have a tremendous
impact on the nation's health.
Hie equipment consists of a
portable tape recorder carried
over tlic patient's shoulder. It re
cords his heart action on mag
netic tape for as long as 10 hours,
in all types of activity.
Electronic scanners can screen
the entire 10 hours of tape in 10
minutes.
Previously electrocardiographic
equipment could record heart
beats only while the patient was
at rest and only for short periods!
of time.
