When in doubt, decide in favor
of youth.
That's been manager Ralph
Houk's policy since he became
manager of the New York Yan
kces in 1961 and it has paid off
dramatically in the cases of
pitcher Jim Bouton and first
baseman Joe Pepitone.
The ultimate payoff, barring a
spectacular uprising by some
American League contender,
looks like a romp to Houk's third
straight pennant.
In May, 1962, Houk was faced
with a choice between veteran
Robin Roberts and Bouton. He
decided in favor of Bouton. And
last winter Houk approved the
three evening.
Jim Schandcvel right-handed his
way to victory for Salt Lake City,
4-2 over Sealtle. He gave up eight
hils but kept them scattered,
Larry Foster took the loss but
Went the distance.
(Seattle took a 1-0 lead in the
ociiing frame but the Bees ma
neuvered ahead in the third on
two walks, a single and an error.
They were never topped.
Grba pitched his farewell game
for Hawaii in convincing fashion.
He kept 13 hits scattered and
moved the Islanders in front to
stay in the 4th with a two-run
home run. Grba was recalled,
along with three others, by the
Los Angeles Angels after t h c
game.
Denny Ribant, the first of four
Bear hurlcrs, was charged with
the loss.

today as he began his bid for the
PGA, the only major golf cham-i
pionship he never has won.

planned on lagging his pulls.

"You are going to have to be

up there in the hope I'll leave

As for giving up on his driver
he hoped that his one iron and

The Los Angeles Dodgers are
operating on the theory that a
hero a day will keep the con
tenders away.
Sandy Koufax, Johnny Podres,
Maury Wills, Tommy Davis
they've all taken their turns in
the spotlight as the Dodgers have
increased their National League
lead to 64 games and their won
lost percentage to .620.
And when they're not tearing
up the peapatch, it seems that
there's always somebody else
somebody like Ron Fairly or Ron
Perranoski.
Fairly, who's been with the
Dodgers since 1960 but rarely gets
any publicity, and Perranoski,
who's been with them since 1961
and is only beginning to get
some, combined Wednesday night
to enable the Dodgers to down
the Pittsburgh Pirates, 3-2. The
Dodgers have now won nine of
their last 11 games and 14 of their
last 17.
Fairly Led Attack
Fairly drove in two runs with
a second-inning homer and a
fourth inning double and then
Perranoski went to Bob Miller's
rescue in a seventh-inning jam
and shut out the Pirates with two
hits the rest of the way. Miller
received credit for his seventh
win while Vern Law lost his
fourth game.
The big Dodger drive has the
other contenders gasping for
breath especially the San Fran
cisco Giants, whose 9-7, llth-in-
ning loss to the New York Mets
Wednesday night was their eighth

The St. Louis Cardinals defeat
