seems like only yesterday. on
maybe last Tuesday, that kindly,
statisticians were trying to help
i understand a million dollars.
It was commonly supposed that
million dollars was too large
sum for us to comprehend all
ourselves, so these statisti
cians would undertake to explain
in terms we could grasp.
I don't recall the exact dimen
sions of a million dollars, but the'
lalogies they used went some-'
tiling like this:
A million dollars laid end to
end would reach from Hominy-
alls. W.Va., to Grit, Tex., or if
placed one on top of the other
ould form a stack live miles
higher than a giraffe on tiptoes.
Not Much Help
I'm sure they meant well, but, :
frankly, these comparisons were.,
never of much help to me in
comprehending a million bucks.-:
Whenever I tried to get a men-
picture of dollar bills
stretched out from Hominy Falls
Grit, my mind would take a
wrong turn on. the outskirts of
Chili, Wis.
Perhaps if they had used $5
bills, or had placed the dollar
bills side by sid; rather than end .
end, I could have grasped.it,
But I doubt it.
At any rate, I have gone
through life without having a
very firm concept of a million
dollars. And now 1 learn that I
am hopelessly behind the times.
In a press release issued this

istician, endeavors to help us un-.
dcrstand a billion dollars.
Apparently someone raised the
ante while I was trying to find.

Nevertheless, this did not deter
him from giving it a go.

biles each costing $2,000." . .
Maybe so, but you would need,
an awfully big garage.

City, Utah," Pelly continued.

Day Slated
TULE LAKE The what's and
how's of showing and judging'
beef, sheep, swine, and horses
will be explained to Tulelake's
4-H members Friday, July 19.
The occasion is the annual 4-H
livestock field day to be held ot
the Tulclake-Butte Valley Fair
grounds beginning at 10 a.m.
The program is designed to
fcive all members an opportunity
to handle each class of stock.
Boys and girls will also judge
each type of livestock with tro-:
phies going to Ihe top scorers ot
beef, sheep, swine and horses. :
Four-H leaders and junior lead-1
crs will conduct the training and
other activities of tho event. The
esponsibilities arc divided among
Tulelake's five 4-H clubs as fol
lows: Cascade judging; Lava
