reaffirmed his belief in the Ari
zona senator's conservative phil
osophy: said a conservative Re
publican would run better next
year than a "me too candidate;

Ohio, is a self-styled "amateur"

A. There are 20 different ways

Q. Wouldn't you have to pay

A. That's true. I'm not against
state taxes.
Lukens said he favors with

the United Nations "as presently
structured." He said tlie United
Nations has not accomplished its
mission. As a substitule he sug

'A. That accounting of the con
vention, yes. I wouldn't agree
with many others.
Q.- And you yourself endorsed
GoTdwatcr. How can you be neu

A; I can be neutral, simply bv
doing my job. Tho federation al
ways has been neutral and as far
as I am concerned, and as far
as anybody working under me. it
will be neutral. We will endorse
any Republican nominee who has
been officially selected.

verting, and I am not a member
of tlie John Birch Society and
never will be. Along the same
line I will not condone or con
demn tliem. My polilics are Re
publican. I have room for anv-
oite in the Republican party and
I will not take part in any po
litical activity outside tlie Repub-

how to win elections?
A. I think what wo have not
done is sell our positive accom
plishments over the past 30 years.
'his is one of the things this new
group (The Young Republicans)
wants to do. We need to educate
the general public as well as our
own party as lo the accomplish
ments of our party within the re
cent years. Wo need to tell the
people about our stand on civil
rights, a stand that actually Is
stronger than tho Democrat par
ty's.
Q. H you do that, how do you
also carry the South?
A. I don't think that the South,
the Individual Southerner, is 'as'
concerned about the civil rights
issue as ho Is about tho economic
and social and political future of
(hat portion of the country.
q. In its civil righls resolution
your executive committee ap
pears to have conic out against
a proposed public accommoda
tions law.
A. I havo in my mind serious
and sincere doubts as to whether
It's a violation of a personal right
to refuse service or lo insist on
service. It has not been legally
decided. I an not a racist. I am
definitely, if anything, a liberal
on civil rights. I'm for these peo
ple ioo per cent and there s no
doubt that any citizen of tho Unit
ed Stales must have the right to
vote, the right to housing, the right
to education, the right to employ
ment. But I do not want to con
fuse privileges with rights.
