Circus Acrobat Dies In Fall
. SALEM (UP1) - A 33-year-old
circus acrobat fell 23 (eet to her
death during a performance of
the Rudy Brothers Shrine Circus
Wednesday before a crowd of
about 3,500 persons.
. The audience which saw Mrs
Arthur Duchek fall was not aware
lint' (all was fatal. She toppled
from a high wire during an act
billed as tlie "Cosmos.
The show went on while Mrs.
Duchek was carried behind the
scenes. A doctor said she suffered
a broken neck.
She was one of tliree persons
- billed in the act.
Mrs. Duchek was balancing on
a ladder on a motorcycle travel'
ing up an inclined wire towards
the rafters of the armory a't the
' Oregon State Fairgrounds. Her
; husband, Arthur, was driving.
Suddenly, Mrs. Duchek struck a
guy wire left there from an ear-
- lier act.
- Fell 25 Feet
- She tumbled 25 feet to a con
crete floor and died minutes later
en route to a hospital.
Another performer, Ronnie
Wcinrich, was on the ladder with
her. He and Duchek managed to
hang on and were unhurt.
Tlie show went on, but people
began drifting out of the audience.
About half remained to see the
end of tlie circus.
Tiic Ducheks were part of the
Cosmos act from Vienna, Austria.

'Rent' Hassle
SALEM (UPI) - Rep. Richard
Eymann, D Marcola, said today
the rent money he owes tile state
board of control is on its w ay and
charged the board "is evidently
starling the political campaign
early."
"Gov. Mark Hatfield. Secretary

nent," Eymann declared.
The board voted Tuesday to
seek a garnishment of the Lane
County lawmaker's legislative pay
to get $79.65 rent he liadn t paid
for a state-owned house lie occu
pled during the session.
Eymann said today he was
"amazed at tlie board's sneaky
personal attack," especially after
he had discussed a number of
state and national issues with Ap
pling just before the board's meet
ing Tuesday.
"Appling made no effort to in
form me of the final amount due
or of any action planned by tlie
board," Eymann declared.

Man Injured Earlier
Just a week ago in Vancouver,
Wash., a performer with the same
circus fell 16 feet when he at
tempted a one-finger stand in a
drenching rain.
Manuel Ramos, 22, escaped se
rious injury in the fall to a wood
en platlorm. He was knocked un
conscious and was treated at a
Vancouver hospital and released.

mechanic who, with a Brooklyn
girl, survived 48 days in tlie Ca
nadian wilderness after their
plane crashed.
Flores and Miss Helen Klaben
disappeared Feb. 4 on a Yukon
territory flight from Whitchorse
to Fort St'. John aboard Mores
single engine plane. They were
rescued when a bush pilot spot
ted their "SOS" scrawled in the
snow.
The FAA revoked Flores' li

least 10 civil air regulations on
the flizht which ended when the
engine failed.
That failure, the FAA noted,

had not left the gas selector on

42-year-old mechanic from San

its organizational meeting here

Flegel said the major job of the
committee would bo a "look-see"
at the State Department of Edu
cation. He noted there has been
confusion over the department's
work in vocational education and
rehabilitation.

Nome and Anchorage for a two-
week assignment for the United
States Post Office.
He made the trip by air.

YMCA day campers christened
a new camping site this year on
the banks of trout-filled Spencer

The two - week camping ses
sion will end July 26 with two
separate weekly periods. There
is still room for some signups
for the last period running from
July 22 to July 26. The fee
is $10 per session.
Day Camp at Silencer Creek is
being supervised by Merland
Phelps, principal at Riverside
Elementary. Among the camp
ing activities boys learn camp
skills, crafts and cooking, and
enjoy fishing and hiking.
Fathers of campers are espe
cially invited to stay with their
sons on the Thursday night over
night stay at the camp grounds.
Interested campers can make ar
rangements by calling the local

was returning to tlie United
States from a job with the U.S.
Bureau of Land Development at
Fairbanks, Alaska.

expenses of the flight.
