2 eggs, well beaten

nuts 1 teaspoon vanilla
Sift flour once, measure, add
baking powder and salt, and sift
again. Melt shortening and Vi
package of the chocolate chips
over hot water. Gradually add
sugar to eggs, beating thorough
ly. Add chocolate mixture and
blend. Add flour and mix well;
then add walnuts and vanilla.
Spread batter in greased 8-inch
square pan. Bake in moderate
oven (350 degrees) about 25 min
utes. Sprinkle the remaining 'i
package chocolate chips over top;
bake five minutes longer. Cool
in pan. Then cut into rectangles.
Top with Toasty Coconut-Topped
Ice Cream Squares.

29 cents per pound. Priced a lit
tle higher and particularly good

and cut-up turkey pieces.
The forecast is for a slight in
crease in beef prices as the price
to the wholesaler is increasing
This increase will probably show
ud first in sleaks with pot roasts
and other longer-cooking cuts of
beef remaining about the same.
This is a good time for salmon
lovers to eat their fill of this
delicious Northwest fish. The sil
ver salmon arc plentiful and an
excellent buy. Silvers, either
the half or whole fish, range in
price from 49 cents to 69 cents.
Charcoal broiled salmon is a
enl treat for those summer visi
tors. Tender little Oregon shrimp
are is short supply. Reports say
the catch is "off," and fishermen
are having a difficult time find
ing good quality shrimp.

'aore flavors
Cherries, mostly coming from
Hood River and The Dalles, are
excellent but the price is rather
high. However, the price of
cherries will not be dropping
much this year because of the
short crop caused by weather
damage and the late season.
Mother Nature's ups and downs
will also mean smaller Oregon
pear, plum and peach crops.
Strawberries are really past
llieir peak, and size and quality
are reduced. Local raspberries
are generally very good. The
raspberry season is all too short,
so enjoy these flavorful berries
while tliey are plentiful.
July is apricot month. Wash
ington grown 'cots are coming in
now, and these plump, golden
fruits are signal that summer is
in full swing. Principal varieties
are Moorpark, Tilton and Blen
heim. All varieties are excellent
for canning and freezing, and are
easy to preserve for out of season
enjoyment. Prices are still a bit
high.
VEGETABLES
To take the "simmer out of
summer" serve a cool crisp salad
made with Oregon grown greens.
Romame, butter, head and leaf
lettuces are plentiful end low
priced, as are radishes and green
onions.
Weather has hurt local cabbage
and its cousin the cauliflower.
As a result more California cab
bage and cauliilower are on the
market good quality but a little
higher priced.
Yellow crook-neck squash and
zucchinis are plentiful and low in
price. First local green end wax
beans are starting. They make a
pleasant menu change.
When buying a dress try to se
lect one that is of good quality.
A plain fabric with subdued tex
ture and no design is a wise
choice. Select a weight fabric that
Is suitable to almost any season.
