Welfare Agency Attacks Eligibility

program to get people off the wel
fare rolls is being planned for the
coming two years, Public Welfare
Administrator Andrew F. Juras
said.
Welfare programs in Oregon
during the 1963-65 biennium will
cost J106.8 million. Of this total,
$41.9 million will come from the
state's general fund, $13.4 million
will be paid by counties, and the
federal government will make up
the balance.
"Better services to help people
toward self-support, and a closer
watch on eligibility will be among
top objectives for the coming bi
ennium," Juras said.
The legislature provided funds
so the agency could hire an addi
tional 124 case workers. Juras be
lieves this can result in long-
range savings as more recipients
arc guided into self - supporting
activities.
The agency hopes to implement
its case classification program

respond to intensive assistance

It is remarkable how often an
expert will find a safety play to
make a contract that other play
ers would lose.
North bid too much and the

entered dummy with the ten of
trumps, ruffed another low heart,
cashed his last two trumps in or
der to draw the rest of East's
trumps and also to get rid of
dummy's last low club and seven
of diamonds.

Improvements in eligibility de
termination also are planned. "If
only those who are eligible re
ceive aid, we can do a better job
w ith them, Juras commented.

A new federal directive will re
quire continuing reviews of eligi
bility in all programs by next
January. This order resulted from
the nationwide check of Aid to De
pendent Children cases completed
in May.
Also given major emphasis in
welfare planning for the bien
nium, Juras said, were improved
health services including expand
ed payments for medical care,
support for recipients from re
sponsible relatives, improved busi
ness operations and work simplifi
cation, administrative improve
ments on the county level in both
business and social service areas,
and staff training.

Mother Dies In if

Mrs. Theodora Koliopoulos,
mother of Mrs. George (Helen'
Blanas and Mrs. Gus (Mary)
Vlahos of Klamath Falls, died
at 11 p.m. July 17 in St. Luke's
Hospital in San Francisco. She
had been ill with pneumonia for
three weeks. Mrs. Koliopoulos
.vas in her early 80s.
Funeral services will be an
nounced. She had made her home in
Klamath Falls at various times
with her daughters.
Survivors include Mrs. Blanas,
Mrs. Vlahos, two sons, George
Koliopoulos, Flint, Mich., and
Alex Koliopoulos of San Fran
cisco. Local grandchildren are
Mrs. Catherine Blanas (Wilbur)
Elliott of Tacoma. Jeanette Vla
hos and George Vlahos of Klam
ath Falls.
Her home in San Francisco
was at 79 Westmont Drive.
