Picture taking has come to be
regarded as one of mankind's four
fundamental motivations, ranking
just behind eating, sleeping and
sex.
In some precincts, it has forged
ahead of sex.
The snapshot urge shows up
most strongly in the American
tourist, who can be instantly
identified by the camera that dan
gles from a strap around his
neck
Cultivated Interest
I cultivated an interest in the
anthropological aspects of ama
teur photography during many
vears of observing tourists in
Washington, D.C., where I work.
The tourists there are fond of
standing in the middle of the
street to snap pictures of monu
ments and such. In driving to the
capital each morning, I usually
arrived with at least one tourist
draped over a front fender. The

Rockefeller In Contest

WASHINGTON (UPI) - The
camp of Sen. Barry Goldwater,
R-Ariz., today viewed Gov. Nel
son A. Rockefeller's attack on
the "radical right" as notice that
Rockefeller is a presidential can
didate. The New York governor's state
ment also was considered in
some quarters as the forerunner
of a stop-Goldwater movement
by other presidential hopefuls in
the Republican party.
A spokesman for Goldwater
Monday night quoted the Arizona
conservative as saying the
Rockefeller statement amounted
to the governor's "formal decla
ration of candidacy" for the GOP
nomination.
Although Goldwater has never
acknowledged that he is a presi
dential aspirant himself, his stock
has boomed in recent months fol
lowing Rockefeller s remarriage
to a divorced woman.
Sought Support
Political observers speculated
that Rockefeller felt he was los
ing ground in the presidential
race and sought to regain lead
ership by his attack on groups
supporting Goldwater.
Newsweek magazine, said Mon
day the Rockefeller statement
was part of a concei ted drive to
block Goldwater's nomination by
forming a coalition of Rcpubli-I
cans supporting the New York
governor, Michigan Gov. George
Romncy and Pennsylvania Gov.
William Scranton.
In a statement in Albany Sun
day, Rockefeller lashed out at the
"radcial right lunatic branch"
and said the Republican party j
was in "real danger of subver-1
sion by that group.
He underscored that statement
Monday night when he expressed
fears that Goldwater will become
a "captive" candidate of the
GOP's extreme light wing.
Rockefeller, whose remarks ob
viously were directed at some
vocal backers of Goldwater, is
expected to renew the attack at
the governors' conference in Mi
ami Beach next week.
Sen. Kenneth B. Keating R
N.Y., a Rockefeller supporter,
followed up the governor's latest
atteck by calling on Goldwater
Monday to repudiate the John
Birch Society and "crackpot ele
ments" backing him.
