Tunnel in Del Norte County Sat
urday, July 20, to dedicate the
1,835 foot tube which will com
plete tlie seaward link of the
Winnemucca-to-the-Sea Highway.
Governors, legislators, highway
commissioners, and personal
friends of Collier's from the
suites of Nevada, Oregon, and
California will meet on the south
slope of Hazelview Summit at the
portal of the $7,500,000 tunnel to
wind up a two-day celebration
Officials of the California Divi
sion of Highways said the new
4.3 - mile route including a
aligned highway will eliminate
128 curves, five hairpin switch
backs, and a steep grade that
climbs 950 feet in four miles on
Highway 199 between Crescent
City and Grants Pass, Ore.
The tunnel was named in Col
lier's honor at the editorial sug
gestion of the Illinois Valley
(Ore.) News which stated Col
lier "had worked single-handed for
years for this ptoiect, which in
the beginning people called fan
tastic. ... He kept lighting un
til he convinced his associates
that the construction would be a
great asset economically to the
whole state, as well as Del Norte
County and the port of Crescent
City. We must admire such per
sistence and salesmanship. . .
The job has taken three years
to complete since first begun in
I960. Tourists, trucks, local resi
dents and commerce Saturday
will be traveling at 60 miles an
hour through the Hazelview
Ridge and into the hinterlands of
Oregon, California, and Nevada,
bypassing the former highway
which the Division of Highways

Dear Ann Landers: Six weeks
ago I sent for some merchandise
which was advertised in a repu
table national magazine.
I received a package with a let
ter attached saying they no long
er had the merchandise I had sent
for but that they were sending a
substitute of equal value and they
were sure I'd be pleased.
Well it was not of equal value,
it was plain junk and I was not
pleased. I mailed it back to them
and attached a note saying if they
could not send me what they had
advertised in the magazine to
please return my check for $5.
Four weeks have passed and
I have heard nothing. How do I
go about getting my money
back? I know they are not go
ing to get rich on my So but if
they can pull this on several
thousands suckers every month it
sure beats working. Thanks for

Dear Ann Landers: Please pass
the word on to "Dim Hopes," the
poor kid who was getting head
aches trying to study in the kitch
en under a 60 watt bulb. At to
day's average rate of 3 cents per
kilowatt hour, the added cost of
burning a 100-watt bulb over that
of a 60-watter woujd be about Vs
of a cent per hour, or 80 hours for
the price of a candy bar. This is
hardly worth making a fuss about
And I'll bet that 60 watt bulb
is in a ceiling fixture when it
ought to be in a portable lamp
beside her bed or on her desk.
This means she is getting at the
reading level only 1-30 or 1-40
the amount of light out of the
bulb. If it were properly placed

of beaver pelts. And the com
merce of the area ever since has
lunged on the efforts of strong
men willing to battle those cliffs
and canyons to oien the rich
and beautiful coast area to the
rest of the nation.
In 1835 the first trail was
hacked from Crescent City to
ward Yreka along the hanks of

TULELAKE - Voters in the
Tulelake Joint Union High School
District will vote Friday night.
July 19, at the high school to
determine if the high school
board of trustees will terminate
(lie present yearly contract en
tered into with J. R. Daughen-
baugh, high school principal.
An affirmative vote would per
mit the school district to pay
the salary for the coming
school year, 1903-1904, in t h e
amount of $10,000 and release
the school official from his duties.
Daughenbaugh, hired on a year-l
to-year basis would be entering
his third year as principal should
the vote be negative.
Under California law he would
have been notified in December
of 1962 of his dismissal or re
hiring, and if not notified, auto
matically was rehired for an
other school year on July 1 of
1963.
A previous board increased
Daughbenbaugh's salary from
$9,250 to $10,000 a year for the
coming school year. Early in this
year, three new members re
placed retiring memlicrs.
Polls at the school will open
at 8 p.m.
A chairman will be named from
the electorate to preside at the
voting session. Voting is expect
ed to be by closed ballot.
The voting will climax a con
troversy of long standing between
the school officials, and parents
over school policies.

Horace Gasquct, punched a 23
mile toll road through to inland
Oregon along the high ridges ol

placed by a new low-level route
along the Smith River Canyon,
made possible by the advent of
power shovels and machinery.
The new route, while a t r c
mendous improvement, still had
one major bottleneck over the
Hazelview Summit where t h e
roadbuiklers resorted to a series
of severe switchbacks up one side
and down the other to cross the
ridge.
The possibility of a tunnel
through the ridge did not origin
ate with Collier visionaries had
discussed it since the inception of
the route which has been dubbed
the Redwood Highway. But early
in the 1950s Collier began bat
tling for it. In 1955 aerial surveys
ordered by Collier convinced the
highway engineers the plan mer
ited detailed study. By 1950 the
engineers found t h e proposal
leasiulc and juslilied.

names are proudly carried by
rivers, lorcsts, and towns per
petuating their memory Smith
River, Jedediah Smith State Park,
Kelsey Creek, the community of
Gasquct arc now joined by Ran
dolph Collier, in whose honor the
Hazelview Summit tunnel w a s
named by the California Legis
lature as recognition of his more
than 25 years of leadership and
service to the state of California
and the citizens of Del Norte and
Siskiyou counties.

Rancher Shot
INDEPENDENCE (UPD Jo
seph Washington, a workman at
the R. M. Walker ranch near
here, was shot and killed early
Saturday. His son-in-law, Adam
Salinas, 22, was being held.
Salinas told police he heard
shouting and noise just after he
went to bed Friday night. He said
he grabbed his gun and ran into
another room.
He said he saw someone com
ing after him and said it ap
peared the person was going to
attack him so he fired with a .22
caliber pistol.

junior riders, a trophy to the all-around cowgirl and cash
