'One In Million1 Tetanus
Case Kills Woman In State

old housewife died at Tillamook
County General Hospital early Fri
day from an "extremely rare
case of tetanus as a result of a
nick on her finger from a hand

A Board of Health spokesman

When she developed symptoms
of Die disease, she was taken to
the Tillamook hospital from her
home at Woods, about 20 miles
from here. Doctors quickly ex
hausted their supplies of the
scrum.
Mrs. Kuenii is survived by her
husband, Herman, and two teen
aged sons, Fred and Vernon.

railroad strike.
Seventeen years ago the law
makers were about ready to give
the President the power to draft

cized the railroads in the name

Mr. Truman was angered.
Grim-faced, he personally went to
Congress to ask for a law bar

Continues With Speech
While the President was ad
dressing the joint session, a
dramatic development occurred.
He had threatened to call out the
Army to run the railroads unless
the strike ended by 4 o'clock that
day. A note was passed up to
Mr. Truman saying that at 3:50
p.m. the strike had been settled
Mr. Truman made no mention
of the nut. He finished his pre
pared address in w Inch he labeled
one union leader unpatriotic and
another as arrogant.
News of the settlement spread
to the lawmakers alter the speech
but they were in no mood to for
give and forget. Little more than
an hour after the President spoke.
the House had rammed through
his bill, passing it by a vote of
206 to 13.
The vote probably would have
been just as lop-sided in the Sen
ate, if the issue had been brought
to a vote immediately. However,
a small band of Senators, headed
by the late Sen. Robert A. Taft
R-Ohio. refused to be stampeded
Taft asked that the bill be sent
to committee for study.
Attempt To Delay
The normal committee to re
ceive such legislation was the La
bor Committee, considered to be
somewhat pro-labor in its mem
bership. The leaders of organized
1,'bor. alarmed over the scope of
live bill, were frantically trying
lo get friends in the Senate to
delay action. The measure would
have applied to all industry, not
just the railroads.
However, the prevailing mood
in the Senate seemed to be for
immediate action. Senators ar
gued that if the bill went to the!
Labor Committee, it might
never come out. A compromise
was worked out to send it to the
Commerce Committee, considered
more receptive to drastic labor
legislation, with instructions to re
port forthwith. It did, in about
an hour, with a few changes.
By that time, Ihe heat of the
moment had passed. Tension
cased. Taft was able to block the
committee report as it was pre
sented to the Senate. It never got
any lurther and was given a
quiet burial.
Some lawmakers who voted for
Ihe bill have regretted their spur
of-the-moment action, among them
the present Senate Republican

Two radar vehicular detection
units control timing of the sig
nals, installed after surveys re
vealed the intersection was a po
tentially dangerous one. particu
larly (or Biddle Road traffic at
tempting to cross the highway.
The Crater Lake Highway sig
nals basically two separate
fully-actuated controllers are
intertied through a master con
trol unit consisting of dual ana
log computers. The computers
have the ability to compare ve
hicle samples and on that basis
select the appropriate signal.
Two radar vehicular detection
units suspended over the highway
permit the master control unit to
compare traffic samples on a con
tinuous basis. The control unit
may then put into effect any one
of 10 different signal patterns.

pattern is selected.
A left turn arrow will signal
when left turns may be made
safely. A unique feature of the
left turn signals is a provision
which will permit vehicles to
move with the left turn move
ment on the same leg of the in
tersection if the opposing left

known as "ADKLA."
Javits, here for a one-day meet

formation of ADELA was sched
uled for next November in this
French capital.
The name "ADELA" comes
from Atlantic Community Develop
ment group for Latin America.
