State Department Seeks Help In Banning Air Travel To Cuba

ture in the 10's is finding suf
ficient numbers of well - trained
persons.
Lyman E. Jackson, dean of the
College of Agriculture at Penn
State, said there are 15,000 new
jubs for college graduates in ag
riculture each year in the Unit
ed States with only 7,000 men and
women available to fill them

Oregon Civil Defense Cut
Not Seen As Trend Start
SPOKANE, Wash. (UPD The
underlying feeling which caused
the reduction of the Oregon civil
defense program may exist in
other areas of the country, but it
can be overcome by a program
of educating the people, accord
ing to the Assistant Secretary of
Defense for Civil Defense.
Waller F. Lineberger made the
statement here Wednesday en
route to the Region 8 Civil De
fense Conference in Yakima Thurs
day and Friday.
Lineberger said he does not feel
the move by Oregon in cutting
its state civil defense program is
the start of a trend.
"It is possible that people
would rather not face the prob
lem of having to resort to fallout
shelters." he added, "but would
prefer to feel that missiles and
other defenses can solve the
problem.

violent explosion rocked the sea
side resort town of Hastings Thurs
day causing many casualties.
First reports said at least 50
persons were rushed to a hospital
after the blast ripped through a
hotel restaurant, shops and cafes.!
Heavy damage was caused by)
the explosion, believed to have
been caused by gas. Furniture;
from the cafes was blown into
the street on the eastern scafront
of this southern England resort
town. Windows were shattered
over a wide area.
Ambulances raced to the scene
and police closed about a half
mile of the seafront because they
feared further explosions. Vaca
tioners and residents were re
moved from the area.
"Fallout shelters can save tens
of millions of lives in the event
of a nuclear attack," Lineberger
said. "The defense shelter sys
tem represents the difference be
tween possible annihilation and
maximum survival."
He admitted "in some ways we
have lagged in civil defense."
"But we are now in the midst
of a stepped-up program of edu
cating people to the value of civil
defense and the shelter program,"
he added.
