netly and De Gaulle visits to,
Wes Germany, especially among
the West Germans as the people
most directly affected.
The American President him
self had made no mention of De
Gaulle during his trip and De
Gaulle had gone to some lengths
to avoid making it appear a pop
ularity contest.
But in the end there was no
doubt that Kennedy had made by
far the greatest impact and that
De Gaulle's own visit had been
disappointment both to Bonn
and Paris.
In Bonn, both Vice Chancellor
Ludwig Erhard and Foreign Min
ister Gerhard Schroeder ex
pressed frank disappointment at

James R. Hoffa say that the U.S.
Justice Department violated the
secrecy of a grand jury which in
dicted tlie union leader, and
"threatened and cajoled" some of
tlie jury witnesses.
In seven pre-trial motions filed
Monday, asking that the jury
tampering charges against Hoffa
be dropped, the attorneys charged
that the witnesses were allegedly
threatened by a special assistant
to U.S. Atty. Gen. Robert Ken
ncdy.
! The attorneys said the assistant
sat in on some grand jury ses
sions which resulted in the indict
ment against Hoffa, took notes
:and later used them in an at
j tempt to have witnesses change
their testimony. They also asked
ithat if the charges are not
dropped, the trial be moved to
another city.
Hoffa and 10 others were

fa s $1 million conspiracy trial
last year. All have pleaded inno
cent.
Defense attorneys said Walter
Sheridan, the special assistant,
and the FBI used notes taken
during the grand jury session to
re-question witnesses, violating
the secrecy of the grand jury.

There also was disappointment
over De Gaulle's continued ada

European community.

LONDON lUPIl The Daily
Express said today actress Eliza
beth Taylor was the "fairy god
mother" who paid for lessons fur
a 13-year-old ballerina whose par
ents could not afford them.
Miss Taylor did it because of
her own frustrated desire to be
a ballet star, the paper claimed.
The girl is Anita Desmarais,
whose talent this week earned her
chance to study with Russia's
famed Bolshoi Ballet.
Miss Taylor was absolutely
wonderful," the Express quoted
Anita's mothers. Mrs. Barbara
Desmarais. "She said (British
ballerina I Margot Fontcyn had
told her about Anita's exceptional
talents, and what a shame it was
that we could not afford to pay
for her at the Royal Ballet School
"And she told me that as
child she very much wanted to
be a ballet dancer, but she over
trained and something went
wrong with her ankles," Mrs.
Desmarais said.
The Express said Miss Taylor
paid Anita's tuition at the Royal
Ballet School for two years, but
remained anonymous the whole
time, not telling the Desmarais
family until Monday night, when
Anita danced a minor role in the
Bolshoi performance here.
As Anita came off stage, there
was a telegram and a bouquet of
pink rosebuds waiting for her
from her lany godmother.
LITTLE EFFECT
Although warm waters of tlie
Gulf Stream pass near the New
England coast, they have little
direct effect on winter tempera
tures there because prevailing

an Atlantic alliance as opposed
to De Gaulle's "tlurd force
theory for a Europe militarily
and economically independent of
the limed States sometime in tlie
distant future.
In fact, some said that the
French-German accord which De
Gaulle had seen as the founda
tion stone for his own grand de
sign for Europe, now had been
reduced to a statement of good
intentions.
West Berliners' cheers for Ken
nedy were echoed in German
newspapers.
"Neither we nor the world can
quibble or doubt tlie dctermina
lion of the American President,"
said Die Welt of Hamburg.
Said the Rhein-Zeitung of Cob-
lentz:
'This week the course was un
mistakably set for the Atlantic
route. It can no longer be set
back to that of a small Europe
. It is plain that freedom and
the future will emerge not from
a French Europe, but from a
united Europe."
But amid the chorus of praise
there also were notes of doubt.
It was noted that the U. S.
President strives to consult his
allies on major moves, especially
as thev deal with relations be
tween East and West but that lie
does not always do so.
News Leak
It was not lost upon tlie Ger
mans lliat it was in Germany
that the news leaked that tlie
United States would at least post
pone its plan for a multi-nation
nuclear navy.
This m turn was followed within
a few days by a Khrushchev pro
posal linking a nuclear test ban
agreement with a non-aggression
pact to be signed between tlie
rival Warsaw Pact Communist
nations and the members of
NATO.

that their future may be deter
mined by agreements in which
they do not participate.
Said tlie Westfaelische Rund
schau of Dortmund:
"Perhaps it will soon become
evident what is demanded of us.
not only in regard to economic
and financial sacrifices, but per
haps we will be asked to dump
overboard many of tlie political
concepts of which we have grown
so fond."
