IS He Doesn't Laugh
Don't Get Upset
9i
By ANN LANDERS
Dear Ann Landers: I have
been happily married (or 20
years. My problem is an unusual
one. My husband
seldom laughs.
He sits there
with a half
smile while oth
ers are in near
hysterics over
something they
find hilarious
Naturally every
one wonders if he is crazy or
if they are. This behavior has
baffled me for years. Lately it
has become downright madden
ing. I've considered all tlie possi
bilities and have eliminated them
one by one. His teeth are nice
looking and in excellent condi
tion. His hearing is perfect. He is
very quick to grasp an idea. Noth
ing escapes him.
He claims he does not have a
superior attitude and moreover
he can't understand why his placi
dity bothers me. Can you give
me some insight? WIFE OF
STONE FACE
Dear Wife: Reactions to pain,
embarrassment, sorrow and hu
mor, vary depending on early
training and conditioning. 1 see
no reason for you to be unhappy
with your husband because his
reactions arc of a lower voltage
than yours or your friends.
This Is what Lord Chesterfield
said about laughter in "Letter To
His Son:"
"Loud laughter is the mirth of
the mob, who are only pleased
with silly things; for true wit or
good sense never excited a laugh
since the creation of the world,
A man of parts and fashion is
therefore only seen to smile, but
never heard to laugh."
Dear Ann Landers: I am a
store manager witn a sticky prob
lem. ' A man who has been employed
by this firm for almoit 18 years
is a notorious Romeo. He is com
petent in his work and has senior
ity, which complicates matters.
I've had to fire three young wom
en in the past 22 months because
they became involved with him.
Currently he is hot on the trail
of a middle-aged employe. They
leave together for coffee breaks
twice a day and everyone knows
they are dating outside the
store. The man's intentions are
not honorable and t hate to see
him make a fool of this nice wom
an. She needs the job and I don't
want to fire her. I can't fire him.
Yet as store manager I feel I
should not allow this affair to
fourish right under my nose. What
are my responsibilities? TORN
Dear Torn: Your responsibilities
are to continue to manage the
store and let the employes man
age their own lives even though
they arc doing a poor job of it.
Firing the woman would not
put an end to this affair. It would
only add to her problems, sland
by and help her pick up the
pieces.
Dear Ann Landers: I'm a girl
16 who has a problem I'm
ashamed of. I hate my best
friend. Ginger and I have been
best friends since grammar school
but in my heart I despise her
because she has stolen every boy
friend I ever had.
I don't know if Ginger goes aft
er my boy friends on purpose or
if it just happens. But it seems
we can both know a boy for years
and when I start liking him then
she gets interested, too.
In April this dreamy fellow
moved here from Michigan and
1 was the first girl he dated. We
got along great and I was on
the verge of getting his I.D.
bracelet. The next thing I knew
lie had asked Ginger to the wind
up dance which is the bigsesl
blast in a junior girl's whole life.
Now they are ,",oing steady and
I am out. Please tell me what to
do. ROBBED
Doar Robbed: No girl can
steal" a boy friend. You lose
out because the boys lose inter
est. If it weren't Ginger it would
be somebody else. Examine vour
relationships and try to Irarn
why they fall apart. This is your
real problem.
Are you going steady? Making
marriage plans? If so, send for
Ann Landers' booklet. "Before
You Marry Is It Love Or Sex?"
enclosing with your request 20
cents in coin and a long, self
addressed, stamped envelope.
Ann Landers will be glad to
help you with your problems
Send them to her in care of this
newspaper enclosing a stamped.

Doctor Says
Eclipse
Dangerous
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (UPIt - A
physician warned Saturday that
looking at a partial eclipse of
the &un may cause blindness or
permanent blurred vision.
Dr. C. C. Gullott, director of
medical services for Trans World
Airlines, issued a danger memo
randum to all TWA personnel re
garding the approaching July 20
eclipse.
Gullott described a simple "sun-
scope" and said it would give
an adequate view of the eclipse
without risk of eye damage.
The sunscope can be made bv
making a sharp hole the size of
a nail in a piece of cardboard
about one foot square. The viev-
er should stand with his back to1
the sun and hold the cardboard
at an angle so the sun's rays
shine through it onto a second
white surface placed at the same
angle at a distance of five feet.
Dr. Gullott rioted that the 195!)
eclipse caused 59 cases of eye
burn in Seattle and 170 cases in
Australia.
"These patients felt no pain,
but all experienced permanent
blurred vision," he said. "They!
could never read again because
their finest ipoint of vision was
burned."
Dr. Gullott said many of those
persons used inadequate filters
such as sunglasses, smoked glass.
beer bottles or exposed photo-
film.
'There are no reliable filters
generally available to the public
which are safe for prolonged
viewing of an eclipse directly,"
he said. "Children's eyes are
much more susceptible to burn,"
he cautioned.
