Leaders of major religious bod

fervent appeals lo America's
white Christians to join the strug

"Now :s the I'me for action-
even costly action that may jeo

It said Christians should be
prepared to "suffer personal in

sintering to bear witness to
their conviction that "every child
of God is a brother to every
other.
The resolution specifically com
mitted the leaders of the Nation
al Council of Churches (who are
generally synonymous with the
leaders of the maior Protestant
denominations which make up the
council) "to engage personally in
negotiations, demonstrations and
other direct action in particular
situations of racial tension."
To organize an effective pro
gram ot church action for racial
justice and get it rolling this sum
mer, the council set up a 25-mem-hor
Commission on Religion and
liace.
The Rev. Dr. Eugene Carson

Control Over Urban Sprawl Asked
By United Press International
During a recent Senate debate
on Housing legislation, Sen. Clif
ford P. Case, R-N.J., pleaded for
new controls over urban
sprawl" which leaves no open
space between developments.
To bolster his argument, he
read from the Bible a warning
voiced 2,700 years ago by t h e
prophet Isaiah:
Woe to those who join house
to house,
'Who add field lo field,
Until there is no more
room. . .
That Isaiah is still being quot
ed in legislative assemblies, aft
er 27 centuries, will come as no
surprise to anyone who is famil
iar with the Old Testament book
which bears his name.
Isaiah was one of the greatest
of the Hebrew prophets, tie
spoke passionately about the
problems ot his own lime inu
Dlace. But his generation had
much in common with our own,
and many of his sermons might
have been preached to an Ameri
can congregation of the year
1963.
Isaiah poured out his message
to the children of Israel for a
period of about 40 years, begin
ning around 740 B.C. This was a
time when the kingdom of Judah
was under consiam min
tack by a ruthless aggressor, tne
Assyrian empire.
penile Were Faithful
lt was a time when people
were very punctilious about keep
ing up the external appearances
of religious devotion. They kept
all of the feasts and were faith
ful in their attendance at solemn
assemblies.
Beneath this superficial piety,
however, Isaiah saw a spreading
moral rot. , .
There were grave social injus
tices in the land. But the people
who controlled the power struc
tures of society "ere not doing
very much to correct them. In
fact, some were trying to perpet
uate oppressions.
Although the nation was enjoy

To escape from anxiety about
the international situation, or out
of boredom, many of the "best"
people had begun to drink heavi

It was to this people that Isai

Contempt For Lip Service
Isaiah said God had only con
tempt for a people who "honor
me with their lips, while their
hearts are far from me.'
"Hear the word of the Lord,"
he cried.
"Bring me no more vain offer
ings; your incense is an abomi
nation to me.
"Your solemn assemblies and
your appointed feats, my soul
hates; they have become a bur
den to me.
"Even though you make many
prayers, I will not listen while
your hands are full of blood.
"But wash yourselves; make
yourselves clean; remove the evil
of your doings from before my
eyes;
"Cease to do evil, learn lo do
good;
"Seek justice, correct oppres
sion, defend (he fatherless, sup

Again and again, Isaiah
stressed that just treatment of
all men was not merely an inci
dental aspect of religion, but the
heart and core of it. And he said
that God was angry at every
wrong inflicted upon the weak or
disadvantaged members of so
ciety.
Speaks Of The Weak
"What do you mean by crush

"By grinding the faces of the
poor? says the Lord God of

He also spoke unequivocally
about the rising rate of alcohol

feminine display, and other
symptoms of moral decadence
which he saw in a materialistic
and self-centered society.
"Woe to those who rise early
in the morning that they may

Teen-Agers
Increase
Jobless
WASHINGTON iUPl-The gov
ernment reported Friday that un
employment increased 800.000 to
4,800,000 million in June, with
teen - agers accounting for all of
the increase.
At the same time, the Labor
Department's Bureau of Labor
Statistics announced that total em
ployment in the country climbed
to over 70 million tor the first
time in the nation's history.
Labor Secretary W. Willard
Wirtz said the new employment
mark, "on the face of it, seems
like a good record." But he said
the nation should take note of the
fact that unemployment was 1.5
million higher than June. 1948.
The seasonally adjusted unem
ployment rate for June' was 5.7
per cent, same as in April, be
fore the teen-age influx began.
The rate had been 5.9 per cent
in May and 5.5 per cent in June,
1962.

LIMA. Peru (-UPH - William
Willis, 70, of New York, headed
his wood-and-steel raft out into
the Humboldt Current Friday on a
13.000-mile voyage to Australia.
Willis, with only two cats for
company, hoped to make the voy

sailed a similar raft to Samoa by
himself in 1954 in 115 days.
A naval tug towed Willis' "Age

Naval Base Thursday as a crowd
of Americans and Peruvians
watched under cold and cloudy
skies.
Willis said goodby to his wife,
Teddy, 61, and stepped aboard
the 32-by-23 foot raft made of

frame and topped by a wooden
deck, a small wooden cabin and

"Hear the word of the Lord."
Isaiah cried to the rulers and

"The Lord of Hosts says. . .1
