CAIRO (UPD-There's a new
look to Egypt's famous belly
dancers and they're not very
happy about it.
They've been ordered to cover
up and put a brake on their wig
gles. From now on, the fashion for
belly-dancers is a one-piece affair
thas reaches from the collarbone
to the kneecap.
The new dance costume, or
dered by chief censor Abdei-Ra-hlm
Sorour, "decently covers the
chest, stomach and back." a di
rective said. The skirt "has no
slits or openings, on the sides or
elsewhere."
Sorour's creation was outlined
in a circular issued to belly
dancers and ntphf filths flnfininn
"the limits within which thej
Oriental dance should be per-j
formed." It said:
A dancer should not recline
or stretch on the dance floor. If
she wiggles, she should do it
slowly.
A dancer should not perform
on top of, or between, the tables.
Dancing is subtly for the dance
iioor.
A dancer should not be photo
graphed "in suggestive, intimate
positions" with customers while
she is dancing or while in her
dance suit,
Musicians should not dance
with or around the belly-dancer.
A dancer should not perform
to nationalist, military or religious
oiusic.
Belly-dancers are up in arms.

glamor of smoking.
It is not impossible that action,
eilher voluntary or otherwise
may result in a shift of empha
sis of these commercials per
haps as a precautionary advertis
ing step with sound public rela
tions value, especially if med
ical evidence should mount in a
way to make any other decision
appear unfavorable.
In the not too distant past,
"CBS Reports" shook the multimillion-dollar
cigarette advertis
ing accounts of television with a
study of the smoking hassle. And
I-croy Collins, president of the
National Association of Bred
casters 1.NAB1, caused a furor
last fall when he criticized ciga
rette commercials aimed at
youngsters and said flatly there
are mounting evidence that ciga
rette smoking posed "a serious
hazard to health."
Collins, it might be noted, is a
pretty forward-looking fellow,
having warned his broadcasting
colleagues about the ratings mess
well in advanced the time that
it came fully to public light be
fore a congressional investigative
body this year.
All of this is of particular in
terest not only to youngsters, but
to parents, because it is no se
cret that the coming video sched
ules for the new season are
aimed more than ever at captur
ing the increasing financial pow
er of teen-agers.
Earlier this month, an article
in the journal of the American
Academy of Pediatrics by Dr.
Samuel Wishik, of the University
of Pittsburgh School of Health,
charged the Madison Avenue wiz
ards with making smoking seem
related to sex appeal.
"There is no doubt that 'Madi
son Avenue' has a heavy hand in
it," the article said, warning of
possible government heat un
less something is done. "Cig
arette advertising nowadays, es
pecially on television, plays up
the tw o elements of sex and ma
turity to sell its product. Smok
ing by young people is gla
morized, made to seem sexually
attractive, and in the male equat
ed with virilitv."

man David Brinkley leaves his
NBC office at 7:30 each evening
to tool his convertible sports car
on the 10-minute drive home in
time for dinner with his wife and
three sons.
Most of the time they wait for
him. i
And home for Brinkley is a two-,
story colonial-style brick edifice
two city blocks from the ash-i
mgton, D.C., border in Chevy
Chase. lid., a very fashionable
address in the nation s capital.
After dinner, like as not. Brink
lev will head for his cellar work
shop which is filled with wood
working tools of every descrip
tion. There he happily hammers,
saws and chips away at his fa
vorite pastime, cabinetmaking.
Woodworking Relaxes
Brinkley, a low-pressure south
erner, beats the terrific pres
sures of his job by turning out
beautiful furniture, including the
family dining room suite.
It keeps me from going nuts,"
he explains.
' Woodworking is relaxing be
cause when vou work "with tools
everything either fits or it
doesn't. There's no half-way
about it; no gray areas like hu
man relationships or the news.j
When you make something with
your hands it's a relief to know
whether it's right or wrong." j
Because nightclubbing and res
taurant dining is unchic in Wash
ington the Brinkleys entertain a
great deal at home. And when
they go out it is usually to the
homes of friends.
"The favorite indoor srt in
Washington is talking," Brinkley
says "and the best place to do
that is at home."
Their friends are the same ones
they've known for 20 years,
among them are politicians, news
men and just plain folks. Brink-
ley s news partner, Chet Huntley,
is not a close friend for the very
good reason that he works out o(
New York and sees partner David
only three or four limes a year.
Because he is not a performer
per se. the tall. 43-year-old re-
(porter cannot accustom himself to1
being a celebrity.

stuntwoman, has one or the most
hazardous jobs in Hollywood.
Falling off horses, getting
knocked down in a fight scene
or wrecking an automobile has
long been the domain of Holly
wood's stuntmen to whom busted
bones are occupational hazards.
Usually women shv away from

Miss Statlcr entered the movie
business on horseback. She had
been a rodeo trick rider, but long
weeks away from home following
the rodeo circuit got tiresome.
"Heing a stuntwoman is the type
of work that I'm suited for," said
Miss Statler, who was once a sec
retary. "I hate a routine job."
Mary has a respect for her pro
fession, a business which employs
:il)out 12 women in Hollywood.
"I'll refuse to do a stunt if I
don't know how," she said wisely.

dollar, man and his money have
almost always been parted by the
simple prospect of a lot-for-a-lit-tle.
Ancient civilizations, including
the Romans and others before
them, recognized man's willing
ness to bet. The lottery is as old
as that.
It is not too surprising there
fore that one of the SO states has
decided to set up a public sweep
stakes to raise needed revenue.
What is surprising is that the
slate Is Ivevv Hampshire, a con
servative Yankee region that is
predominantly of Protestant faiths
whoe clergymen are strongly op
posed to gambling.
First Of Century
The sweepstakes approved by
the New Hampshire Legislature
and signed into law by Gov. John
W. King April 30 is the first pub
lic sanctioned lottery in the Unit
ed States in this century. The
last one was in 1890 in Louisiana
and it folded after two years in
welter of corruption.
Here is how the state's sweep
stakes would work:
Tickets would be $3 each with
a limit on the number to be sold
any one person. Iher would be
two races annually to be run at
one ol the state s three race
tracks. The prize in each race
would probably be about $50,000.
The proceeds, estimated at be
tween $4 million and $8 million
annually, would be used solely for
education and would be distribut
ed to local communities

accurate, his property taxes, now
very moderate, will dip even fur

income taxes in New Hampshire

Here are the miin difficulties:
The Protestant clery, a pow.
erful force in the state, is mount
ing a vast campaign aimed at
forcing repeal of the law.
The federal government has
pointed out a myriad of laws
which, if obeyed, would keep ev
ery New Hampshire sweepstake
ticket witnin the states boun
daries. The state must find some way
to deal with counterfeit lottery
tickets and racketeering.
The earliest the sweepstakes
can get under way is next year,
because of a local option section
in the enabling act. The tickets
can be sold only in New Hamp
shire's 49 state-operated liquor
stores or at the three race tracks.
But tlie sale of tickets in any of
these places is subject to approv
al of the voters in the community
where the store or race track is
located.
The Protestant clergy, led by
the Rev. Hartley T. Grandin, ex
ecutive secretary of the New
Hampshire Council of Churches,
may try to cripple the sweep
stakes through a pulpit cam
paign designed to take advantage
ui the local option provision.
'You can bet we aren t going
to take this sitting down," the
Rev. Mr. Grandin said. "This
fight has just begun and we plan
a strong comeback."
