Opening lead A
Convention
A Check
By OSWALD JAC011V
Newspaper Enterprise Assn.
There is one major difference
between the experts use of Blaik
uuod and the average player's.
The average player (eels that he
must use Blackwood lo bid a
slam. The expert only uses the
convention as a final check after
he has decided to bid a slam and
wants to make sure he has enough
aces.
Thus an expert never uses
Blackwood when he is void in
suit and never when he has
worthless doublelon in an unbid
suit or in a suit bid by his op
ponents. Thus a ereat manv nhivnrc
would use Blackwood with the
North hand after their partner's
one spade response to the opening
club bid. No expert would. The
expert would reason that if p?rt
ner showed one ace he wouldn't
be sure that he could make six.
that if partner showed two aces
he wouldn't know about sev
en, and that even if narinpr
showed no aces six might be
cold.
Instead, the exnert unnlH nrnh.
ably make the bid shown in the
oox ana jump right to six spades.
He would reason that if his part
ner held two aces and the king of
spades he would bid seven and
he would reason further that ir
respective of what his partner
held there would be a good play
to make six.
This time South makes s i x
against an ace of diamonds open
ing and seven against any other
lead. But even if South did not
hold the king of diamonds he
might make the hand. West
might open a heart or even a
club or a snade whereuunn Snnih
would romp home with a grand
tlam.

BUFFALO SCRAMB
Here's an event said to be worth the price of the entire
show alone. Just imagine! All chutes open at one time
with a mean Buffalo springing out of each one with a
cowboy on his back. One of the most dangerous fea
tures of the show as any downed rider is apt to find al
most a ton of mcat-on-the-hoof on his back at any mom
