Black Elk, full-blooded Oglala
Sioux Indian, probably is as fa
miliar lo American tourists as
the Indian-bead nickel, and
beyond a doubt the most photo
graphed Indian in the nation.
With special permission from
the National Park Service, Black
Elk poses for pictures at the base
01 mount Kushmore in Western
South Dakota. During peak sum
mer months, he is photographed
as u.ii-n as a.ouo times a day.
His photograph has been taken
with everything from a box cam
era lo expensive imports, from
amateur movie cameras to the gi
ant television cameras used in
the first U.S. Telstar broadcast.
Black Elk's regular dress at
Mount Kushmore is that of a
brave he wears the chief head
dress only when posing for spe
cial pictures, or at the request
of a tourist.
Born in 18S9 at .Manderson. a
small community on the Pine
Ridge Indian Reservation, he is
Hie sixth in line to carry the
name Black Elk. His father and
the famous chief Crazy Horse
were first cousins. Both partici
pated in the Battle of the Little
Big Horn acainst Gener.il rw-
Prior to his work in tourist
business Black Elk was a suc
cessful rancher in western South
Dakota and won several awards
for his crops and livestock.
During the initial Telstar broad
castsent from the United States
to 19 European countries Black
Elk's picture was beamed across
the continent, then throughout the
United States in a later broad
cast. He was the first human to
appear on Telsar.
