Although his 19 wins for the
Reds in 1961 represent h i s top
one-season total in the majors
O'Toole won 20 games for Nash
ville in the Southern Association
during 1958 and was rather proud
of the accomplishment when he
reported to Cincinnati the follow
ing spring.
One of his teammates prodded
him about not doing any running
in spring training that year and
O Toole blithely replied
"I've got news for you. I won
20 at Nashville last year without
running at all.
Majors' Biggest Winner
O'Toole does some occasional
running now but he certainly has
nothing to sweat about wiui a 13-
3 record that makes him the big
gest winner in the majors so far.
He was the beneficiary of a
three-run homer by John Ed
wards Thursday night and an
other solo homer by Bob Skinner.
The Reds had only a 2-1 lead
until the fifth inning when Ed
wards' homer featured a five-run
rally at the expense of Art Ma
halley, who suffered his ninth
loss in 12 decisions.
The Milwaukee Braves defeat
ed the Pittsburgh Pirates 2-1 and
the Chicago Cubs blanked the
Houston Colts 5-0 in the only
other NL games scheduled.
Southpaw Denny Lemaster of
the Braves held the Pirates to
five hits and then won his own
game with an eighth inning horn-

Somebody goofed on Jose
Azcue, w ho might have wound up
his career in the minors had he
not been given one more chance
by the Cleveland Indians a month
ago.
Azcue hud previous trials with
the Cincinnati Reds and Kansas
City A's, both of whom had
written him off as weak hitter
with only triplc-A potential.
But the Indians acquired him
from Portland of the Pacific
Coast League in a trade with
Kansas City a month ago and
have been congratulating them
selves ever since.
Taking over as Cleveland's No.
1 catcher when receiver Johnny
Romano broke a finger in late
May, the 23 year-old Azcue ha:
fashioned a solid .303 batting
mark that has helped make the
Indians the hottest club in the
majors for the month of June.
Azcue helped the Indians to
their 18th victory in their last 21
games Thursday night when he
drove in (our runs with a pair of
White Sox 9-4, and the Boston
Red Sox handed the Detroit Ti
gers their 10th straight defeat
8-3 in Uie only other American
League games played.
Bobby Richardson's two-run
double in the ninth inning off ex
temmate Jim Coates enabled the
Yankees to overcome a 4-3 defi
cit against the Senators, who lost
their eighth in a row.
Homers by Harmon KUle
brew and Earl Battey plus Zoilo
Versalles' triple with the bases
full were the key blows in Min
nesota's victory over Chicago.
The Red Sox capitalized on
home runs by Dick Stuart and
Chuck Schilling to score five
runs In the fourth inning and
straight defeat under new man

Florida Ai-M's Robert Hayes
was named the favorite in seed-
ings Thursday but three others.
Henry Carr, Larry Questad and
Nate Adams were all given good
chances of coming off with hon
ors in what some predicted would
be record time.
Hayes has run 9.3 in the 100
once already this year. That is
one-tenth of a second off the
world mark. Carr, of Arizona
State, also is rated a good bet.
He has a pending world mark
of :20.3 in the 220 and also has
done 9.3 in the 100. The third
man to run it in 9.3 is Purdue's
Adams. Questad of Stanford pre

Following tho opening 100-yard

the 120-yard high hurdles quali
