Goldwater, Rockefeller Backers Competing
DENVER (UPI) - Goldwater,
and Rockefeller agents competed
in a soft-sell search for support
among Republican leaders today
during a three-day meeting of the
GOP National Committee and the
party's state chairmen.
Supporters of both Gov. Nelson
A. Rockefeller of New York and
Sen. Barry Goldwater of Arizona
for the 1964 presidential nomina
tion were conspicuously active at
this early summer Republican
gathering on the fringe of the
Rocky Mountains.
The national committee was
opening a two-day meeting today
with a round of talks scheduled
to end Saturday with formal se
lection of the site for the 1904
national convention. Although the
committee named to recommend
the city deferred a final vote un
til Saturday morning. San Fran
cisco was reported to be virtual
ly assured of getting the nod over
Chicago.
The state chairmen, many of
them members of the national
committee, held an all day closed
workshop meeting Thursday to
discuss w ays of strengtliening the
party organization for 1964.
In private talks outside the con
ference rooms, Goldwater back
ers were obviously cheered by re
cent evidence of an upsurge in
support for their conservative
hero. This spurt lias been indi
cated by public opinion polls
since Rockefeller's remarriage
early last month.
