Scout Ranch
:ilm Offered
"Beyond the Tooth of Time."
a movie depicting the history and
high adventure of the Philmont
Scout Ranch in Cimarron, N.M.,
has been released to the public
by the Boy Scouts of America,
it was announced recently by Jo
seph A. Brunton Jr., chief scout
executive. The film commemo
rates the 25lh anniversary of the
national scout camp.
The 27-minute color film will
be available free of charge to
all adult leaders in the Boy
scouts' 529 councils across the
nation. It will serve to introduce
the camp to boys who may later
plan to attend.
The movie will also be offered
at no cost to schools, PTAs, civic
organizations, religious groups
and television. It will be distrib
uted by Modern Talking Pictures,
Inc. Thus marks the first time
an outside organization has dis
tributed a Boy Scout film.
"We want to show everyone the
scouting activity and rugged
mountain living that's available to
every boy at Philmont," says
Brunton. "For this reason we are
not limiting the distribution of the
film to the scouting organiza
tion. This is an opportunity to
show parents, teachers, and com
munity leaders the fine training
in citizenship and character a
boy receives through the diverse
activities of the Boy Scout pro
gram at Philmont.
Philmont Scout Ranch was do
nated to the Soy Scouts of Ameri
ca by the well-known philanthro
pist, Waite Phillips, in 1938. In
addition to rugged mountain
camping for older boys, the camp
provides a volunteer (raining cen
ter for adult leaders and is main
tained as a year-round working
ranch. Since the camp's incep
tion, over 150,000 boys and adult
leaders have camped or been
trained there.
Groups interested in ordering
"Beyond the Tooth of Time"
may write to Modern Talking Pic
ture Service, Inc., 3 East 54th
Street, New York 22, N.Y.
Rise Shown
By Weeklies
Weekly newspapers enjoyed an
increase of 6.8 per cent in total
income in 1962 over 1961, while
the total expenses went up only
3.7 per cent. These figures were
determined in a weekly news
paper cost study conducted by
Carl C. Webb, associate professor
at the university of Oregon
School of Journalism.
The findings of the National
Weekly Newspaper Cost Study
were published in the June issue
of National Publisher.
Webb is chairman of the cost
study committees for both the
National Editorial Association and
tlic Newspaper Association Man
agers, co-sponsors of the annual
studies. He also is manager of
Uie Oregon Newspaper Publishers
Association.
The financial report was based
on the 55 "composite" weekly
newspapers which furnished fig-
uif for each income and ex
penditure. The "composite" had
an average circulation of 3,042
and employed 13.1 persons at an
average income of $10,038.
Advertising accounted for 55.4
nor cent of the total income for
tlie composite paper, and circula
tion income represented nine per
cent of the total income.
The study showed wages and
salaries were the largest expendi
ture 43.7 per cent of the total
income. Total expense equalled
87.5 per cent of the total Income
leaving a net of 12 5 per cent
for net income before taxes and
including the publisher's salary.
When the publisher's salary is
subtracted, the percentage for net
income drops to 6.8 per cent ot
tlie total Income.
