'Philatelist' Thrives
On Even Smallest Raws
Police Investigate Tale
Of Shooting, Biting Act
The Klamulli Kails Police De
partment received a report from
Klamath Valley Hospital at 1:45
p.m. Saturday that a man who
came to the hospital was treated
for knife wounds.
Upon investigation, t h e police
found a second man was in Klam
ath Valley being treated after
having his finger nearly bitten
off.
Police learned that the men,
Chester Beck, 1925 Siskiyou Street
and Walter Johnson, 1218 Ad-j
ams, had been involved in an
altercation with each other at 6051
Broad Street earlier in the day.
Johnson said that Beck came
up to him and proceeded to gnaw
on his finger. Johnson looked
dimly on the situation and
stabbed Beck three times in the
back.
Both men were released after
treatment and neither, would sign
a complaint against the other. I

a man a philatelist, but some
times it's hard to keep from it
Stamp collectors comprise one
of the few groups on earth that
cherish imperfection. Even the
smallest flaw in a postage stamp
will send a philatelist into spasms
of delight.
This passion for the defective
seems a mite curious to those of
us who regard the postage stamp
merely as something to mail a
letter with.
Some of the controversies that
shake the philatelic world as,
for example, the inverted printing
of the Dag Hammarskjold mem
orial stamp last fall are likely
to cause a non-philatelist (o quiv-
or with amusement.
At the moment, it looks like a
major flap is shaping up over
the question of Amelia Earhart's
eyebrows.
A new airmail stamp honoring
the famed aviatrix, who disap
peared during a flight over the
Pacific in 1337, recently was un-
veiled by the Post Office Depart
ment, i
It doesn't go on sale until July
25. but already an issue has
arisen over whether R. M. Bow
er, who engraved the stamp, ne
glected to equip Miss Earhart's
likeness w ith eyebrows.
When 1 heard about this. 1
stopped by the department to
take a look at the sample and
also to inspect a photographic en
largement ot ttic area around ner
eyes.
Bower, who worked from an old
photograph, pictured Miss Ear

and shirt and standing in front
of the silver monoplane in which
she disappeared.
To me, her brow seemed as
barren of upholstery as that of
the Mona Lisa. But when I asked
a department press officer wheth
er Bower had indeed omitted her
evebrows. all I got was an enig
matic smile.
