West Berliners Commemorate Double Anniversary
Of East German Workers Revolt, 1948 Soviet Blockade
BERLIN 'L'PH West Berlin
marked a victory and a
defeat anniversaries of the So
viet blockade and the East Ger
man workers revolt.
Both anniversaries always are
a time for stock-taking, for look
ing back and ahead and asking
Can It happen again;
The answer is "yes." But a
repetition of either event is con
sidered most unlikely in tne near
future.
So far as a blockade goes, the

paign to get the Western Allies

BLM Reforests 37,000 Acres In '62
During the last year the Bu
reau of Land Management re
forested 37,000 acres of public
lands in Oregon, BLM State Di
tcctw Russell E. Getty announced
today.
vO( that total, 21,000 acres were
planted with young seedlings and
1(1,00 acres were seeded. It took
9,529.000 seedlings and 12,913
pounds of seed to do the Job. Doug
las fir and ponderosa pine are
the predominant species used for
reforestation, said Getty, but
BLM also plants a fair amount
of sugar pine in Southern Ore
gon.
Getty said the RLM reforests
lion program in Oregon includes
seeding, planting, brush removal
on nonproductive lands, brush con
trol; by chemicals on land where
brush overtops young trees, and ro
dent control. New techniques are
used whenever they promise to
aid foresters in stepping up the
production of forest resources.
Seed spotting, the planting of
Individual tree seeds, is being
developed by BLM in Oregon,
said Getty. Also, heavy paper is
being used to mulch seedlings
In an attempt to combat grass
competition and drying soil tem
peratures in new forest planta
tions. Repellents may soon offer
aid to BLM foresters by discour
aging the forays of mice, rabbits,
and deer into such plantations.
For many years BLM and the
Forest Service have been work
ing together in a project near
Mcdford to develop sugar pine
seedlings that are resistant to
the devastating w hite pine blister
rust.
BLM conducts a sustained yield
forest management program on
2.5 million acres of commercial
timber lands in Oregon. The key
to continuous forest production
is the rapid reforestation of cut-
over, burned, and non-productive
timber lands, said Getty.

out of Berlin. And Western diplo
mats believe the Communists with
Russian backing are firmly in
control in East Germany although
as always there is discontent ag
gravated by shortages and now
the Berlin wall.
Itecall Defeats Vividly
The 10th anniversary of the re
volt in Germany June 17
overshadows the 15th anniversary
of the beginning of the blockade
on June 19, 1948, even though the
revolt was crushed by Russian
tanks and an "Allied airlift beat
the blockade.
Germans appear to recall their
defeats more vividly than their
victories, perhaps because they
have had more of them in re
cent times.
June 17 is an annual holiday
in West Germany and every year
the same discussions arise on
how the day should be spent.
Rallies and observances are
held in West Berlin and West Ger
many to pay tribute to the 50
known dead who laid down their
lives for freedom. Many West
Germans use the day for fun or
rest and pay scant attention to
its original meaning.
Problem Is Involved
But many others regard the an
niversary as an occasion tocon-
sider the whole problem of the
future of Germany, its split and
the Berlin wall.
The problem is so involved
seemingly so incapable of solu
tion. that many consider a picnic
or beach trip on the day an un
patriotic act, a sign of indiffer
ence to Germany's future.
The revolt anniversary is a
suitable day to consider the 18-year-old
division of Germany and
the uncertain future because the
revolt showed that the Russians
would not allow East Germans
to throw off their Communist re
gime. The revolt began as a protest
of East Berlin construction work
ers against a speedup that called
for more work for less pay.
This spark fanned an uprising
that swept away Communist rule
in many East German cities.
As in Hungary little more than
three years later, brutal Russian
force crushed the revolt. As in
Hungary, the Russian claim that
the people -supported communism
was exposed as a myth for all
the world to see. But what of the
future?
o Answers In Sight
Will the Russians ever allow
East Germans to be reunited
with the West as they wish? .Will
free elections ever be held to re
unify the nation? How long will
the division of Germany continue
and how will the division ever be
ended?
As for the blockade anniversary,
since Berlin is surrounded by
Eastern territory, a certain danger
always exists that the Communists
will try to interfere to some de
gree with traffic to the city.
If the Hussians warn 10 lane
the risk of war they might block
ade Berlin again.
But the United States has made
it plain lime and again that it
will not allow itselt to oe loreea
from Berlin.
