Last Modoc
Member Dies
The last known full-blooded Mo
doc tribal member in Klamath
County. Asa T. Miller, died Jujie
18 in Hillside Hospital. He had
been in failing health for some
lime.
Mr. Miller was 85, born in 1878
in Oklahoma, after his parents
were returned there from
the Klamath Indian Reservation
at the close of the Modoc War ol
1872-1873.
He knewmany of the old ways
of the tribe. On his return to
this country he owned and oper
ated a rooming house in Link
ville, now Klamath Falls.
He became an ordained minis
ter in the Open Bible Standard
Church, serving with his wife
Mildred, also ordained, until bcr
death a short time ago. He
preached in his native Modoc
tongue and the language of the
Klamaths.
Mr. lliller lived in Chiloouin
for many years and moved to
Klamath Falls in 1M7. In his early
life he had played with the old
baseball leagues in the Middle
West.
Funeral services will be at 10
a m. Thursday, .June 20, in tlw
chapel of Ward's Klamath Fu
neral Home with Pastor Evert J.
Tuning of the Sprague River
Friends Church officiating. Final
rites and interment will be in the
Lobart Cemetery near Chilnquin
Survivors include two daugh
ters, Dorcas Joe and Dona Amos,
also five grandchildren and one
great-grandchild, all of Klamath
Falls, and a stepdaughter, Rose
Tartnn of Medford.

toes, 1 teaspoon of salt, 'i tea
spoon of grouund black pepper, 2
tablespoons of boiling water and
j teaspoon of suaar. Cover and
rook, slowly, 40 minutes, or until
crisp-tender. Serve hot with bacon
crumbled on top. Serves 6.
