ANCHORAGE, Alaska (UPI)
iA tiny Island in a cluster around
AUu at the Up of the Aleutian
chain shelters an integral part of
tho air oefen of the North
American continent.
The island is Shemya. It houses
gigantic Air Force radars and
other technical equipment that
military authorities regard as
"top secret." It is one of the
closest U.S. military installations
on American soil to Russia.
Shemya is more than 1,300
miles from the nearest U.S. Air
Force installation in the Alaskan
Air Command at King Salmon
And it was from King Salmon
that U.S. fighter planes streaked
into the sky when a Russian
plane flew over Alaska territory
on March IS. Another Russian
plane the same day flew over wa
ters regarded "out of bounds" for
Soviet planes.
Both Russian planes may
have been scouting Shemya,
Air Force Silent
Tlie Air Force says very little
about Shemya. Officials of the
Alaskan command at Elmendorf
Air Force Base are touchy on the
subject. Queries are greeted
coldly.
There is little on the island
other than the Air Force station
highly secret equipment, Air
Force and Army personnel, and
a dog or two. There are no
women.
Part of Shemya's value to the
military is in its level topography.
There isn't a hill higher than 500
feet above sea level. Because of
the relatively level terrain the is
land is called a stationary flat
top. Planes can get on and off in
a variety of foul weather without
running the risk of smashing Into
unseen mountains.
Build Airbase
During World War Two, Army
Engineers covered the landscape
with buildings and roads for a
modem airbase operation. Over
1,000 structures went up, linked
by a road net 80 miles long. Tho
island is about 4V4 miles square.
Army Engineers came back In
1937 and in the following year
work was feverish. Steel and con
crete was used to fashion a dock
braced against the enraged Ber
ing Sea when it is whipped into
frenzied whitocaps by lSO-miie-an-hour
gales.

Polygamy Is not practiced in and
around cities.
But in the bush the number of
wives a man has is his status
symbol. A rich man might, per'
haps, have threo or four women
living with him. Usually one will
be his favored companion. Tie
ol hers play a supporting role.
Inevitably there is competition
for likely wives, and the father
of a few daughters is a man of
influence.

Yesterday ahe told me I ought
to part my hair in the middle
and then she took her comb out
of her purse and started comb
ing. She got so close to me she
steamed up my glasses. I like
her, Ann, but I don t want to
get mixed up with a married
woman. She has pull with the boss
and I can't take a chance on
hurting her feelings. Please tell

The woman may sneak for her
self, but she certainly does not
speak for me. I have seven chil
dren. My husband has a good
job, as hers does. We are not
wealthy either jut comfortable.
Our friends and relatives have
been bringing us hand - me-
downs ever since the children
were babies. It's been a great
help.
1 ve never considered hand-me-
downs an expression of pity. They
are gifts of good will from peo
ple who like and respect us. The
children's attitudes are extreme
ly healthy. They have never
been too proud to wear second
hand clothes. They actually ar
gue about who is going to get
what.
So, please, Ann Landers, make
it plain that some of us love
to see those boxes. Humility is
not an altogether extinct virtue.

touchy problem which revolves
around a headstrong boss and
his irritating habit of bumming
cigarettes.
Mr. H. is under doctor's orders.
He is not supposed to smoke
so lie doesn't buy any. His son
works in the office and has asked
me to let him know at once if I
see his fulher smoking.
If Air. H. spots a pack of cig
arettes on my desk he takes one.
When I am away from my desk
he goes into the top drawer and
helps himself. Whenever he sees
me smoking he asks for a cig
arette. Yesterday when he asked
for a cigarette I reminded him
that the doctor said he should
not smoke. He told me to mind
my own business that I was paid
to work and not to lecture him
about his health.

Be Checked
EVANSTON, 111. (UPI) -Mothers
can protect their babies
from the danger of contaminated
food by checking for signs that
baby jars have been opened
before buying.
"Experience shows that some
people, unaware of, or indiffer
ent to, the dangers of bacterial
contamination, open jars of baby
food in the store, sometimes taste
the contents, and return them to
the shelves," reports the Ameri
can Academy of Pediatrics'
committee on nutrition.
Two types of safety features on
screw caps will reveal whether
the jar has been opened or has
lost its vacuum.
A flexible button in the center
of tlie cap should be depressed,
as if it had been sucked in by
the vacuum in the jar. If the
vacuum is lost, the button pops
up and can be pressed up and
down with the finger.

guessing furiously about his
successor.
But he has done nothing to
answer the questions his fellow-
countrymen are asking:
Will De Gaulle run for a sec
ond term?
If he doesn't, whom will he
endorse?
De Gaulle touched off presiden
tial speculation by tossing the
