Klamath Falls and the Modoc
chapter in Alturas.

decided to jump to two spades
after North responded with one
heart to the opening diamond bid.
From then on North turned him
every way but loose and there
was South at a nice slam con
tract that had only one defect.
There were two natural trump
losers.
South gazed at dummy , some
what mournfully, but not mourn
fully enough to tell East and West
that his cause was hopeless.
Dummy's ace of clubs held the
first trick and South played the
ten of spades. East had a prob
lem. He did not know that South
was looking only at ace-nine-seven-three
of spades and East decid
ed that it behooved him to play
his queen. South put on the ace1
and when the jack dropped from'
the West hand South was able to
ruff out his last low club, pick
up the rest of the trump suit with
the loss of only one trick and
chalk up the impossible slum.
East had been faced with a
lough play, but he could have af
forded a low card on that first
spade lead just in case West did
hold that singleton jack.

Jane Anding of Gilchrist and a
recent graduate of Gilchrist High,
was awarded a full-tuition schol
arship to attend Oregon College
of Education next year.
The scholarships are awarded
by the State Scholarship Commis
sion, with recommendations from
the OCE scholarship committee,
on the basis of need, field of stu
dy, and grade point average of
2.5 or above.
A total of 58 part-tuition schol
arships, which arc awarded in
any field of study, and 141 full
tuition scholarships, limited to ele
mentary education majors, were
awarded at OCE this vcar.
Teamster Leader Conviction Seen As Justice Victory

Senate Finance Committee Wed
nesday approved a bill to give
World War II and Korean War
veterans an opportunity to renew
G.I. life insurance they have al
lowed to lapse.
Although the Senate has passed
the measure at least five times
previously, it always has died in
the House.
Veterans Administration offi
cials have said the plan would
not cost the government any mon
ey because veterans would pay all
the costs.
Wednesday the conviction of
Teamster leader Anthony (Tony
Pro Provenzano, was a victory
for the Justice Department in its
war against labor racketeers.
"The door has been opened,"
said the 31-ycar-oId lawyer who
served as co-counsel with Mat
thew Boyland in Provenzano's
trial. Levin said the conviction
could lead the way to the con
viction of other Teamster union
officials.
Provenzano was found guilty
Tuesday night by a federal court
jury of extorting $17,100 from
Dorn Transportation. Inc., Rens
selaer, N.Y., in return (or labor
peace.
Levin also said he was "posi
tive" that word did not leak to
the jurors of the slaying of ex
Marine Walter Glockner in Ho
boken two days after the trial
started.
Glockner. 27. a member of a
rebel group within Provenzano's
14.000-member local, was to have
been a witness tor the govern
ment at the trial.
He was gunned down in the
street as lie left his home the
night after attending a meeting
of anti - Provenzano Teamsters.
The killing has not been solved.
The next day. U.S. District
Judge Robert Shaw ordered the
jury locked up in a hotel after
every session of tlie trial.
Levin said the U.S. marshal's
office "did a superb job" of pro
tecting the jury "from being con
taminated" by news of the Glock
ner slaying, which might have
swayed its opinions.
Provenzano said he knew noth
ing about Golckner's slaying and
announced plans to provide schol
arships for the dead man's two
daughters.
Provenzano, regarded by some
as the most powerful Teamster
union official in the country next
to International President James
R. Hoffa. was visibly shaken by
the jury's verdict of guilty,
"I feol fine, fine," be said gruf
fly as he stepped into his car fol
lowing the trial. To newsmen's
questions, the usually talkative
union leader said tersely: "See
my lawyer."
Ho is currently free under
$1,500 bail pending filing of a mo
tion for a new trial June 26. He
could be sentenced to 20 years in
prison and fined $10,000.
