At Kaline may at last have the
last laugh on those critics who've
said he'll never be a better ball
player than he was at 20 years
of age.
It's been seven lull seasons;
since Kaline won the American
League batting title with a .340
average In 195 and became the
youngest batting champion in ma
jor league history. He's had many
fine seasons since luro dui nes
never topped that year lor all
around effectiveness.
This very well could be the
year in fact. It could be a year
in which he silences his critics
once and for all by becoming the
sixth American Leaguer to win
the triple batting crown. Mickey
Mantle was the last to do it, in
1956. and the only other AL slug
ners who've accomplished the
feat were Ted Williams, Ty Cobb,
Jimmy Foxx and Lou Gehrig.
Tons In Rill's
Kaline Is currently leading the
AL with 45 runs batted in, ranks
second in batting with a .337
mark and his 13 homers place
him two behind leader Bob Alli
son of the Minnesota Twins.
Kaline readied a career mile
stone Monday night when he hit
the 200th and 201st homers of his
career In pacing the Tigers to a
H victory over the Boston Red
Sox. He is the sixth active AL
player to reach the 200-homcr
mark, joining Mantle, Yogi Bcr
ra, Joe Adcock, ltocky Colavllo
and Roger Maris.
Kaline's 200lh homer followed a
single by Jake Wood and a walk
to Billy Bruton and sent the Ti
gers o(( to a 3-0 lead In the first
inning. He hit No. 201 in the filth
Inning to restore Detroit to a
three-run load. Rookie Bill Faul
yielded only three singles all
ty Cart YastriemsWi to win his
tliird game against one defeat.
Indians Heat Orioles
The Cleveland Indians beat the
Ballimore Orioles, 3-2, the Los
Angeles Angels walloped tlx Kan
sas City Athletics, 13-3, and the
Washington Senators scored a 1-0
victory after a 7-0 loss to tne
New York Yankees in other
American League games.
Barry Lalman pitched, seven-hit
bail lor 8 2-3 innings ana pro
' duced his own winning run wllh
a seventh-Inning homer as the In
dians gained their seventh win In
their last eight games. Latman's
homer came on the first pitch by
Mike McCormick after the teams
waited 77 minutes for a rainstorm
to end. Joe Adcock also homered
for the Indians, who dealt th Ori
oles their ninth defeat in II
games.
Collect la Hits
Leon Wagner, Charlie Dees and
Ed Sadowskl homered to lead an
18-hit Angel attack that also In
clude three hits each by Alblc
Pearson and Lee Thomas. Dan
Osinski pitched a seven-hitter be
hind tlie assault to raise his rec
ord to 5-2. Orlando I'ena suffered
his seventh loss against five wins,
Newcomer Al Downing pitched a
league victory but Claude OMeen
earned the Senators split of
their twi-night doubleheader with
the Yankees by pitching a six
hitter in the nightcap. Clete Bey
er had a homer and two singles
and Elstnn Howard a homer and
a double to lead the Yankees' 12-

meetings.
The Giants topped the Dodgers
again Monday night, 7-3, with1
Cepeda crashing a tie-breaking
homer in the eighth inning and
Bailey belting a two-run homer in
the ninth.
Cepeda hit a three-run double
and Bailey drove in two runs with
a homer and two singles when the
Giants beat the Dodgers for the
first time this season on May 24.
And the same pair hit homers on
May 25 when the Giants scored:
their second win of the season
over their arch-rivals.
Cepeda and Bailey have thus
knocked in 10 of the 20 runs the
Giants have scored in their three
victories over the Dodgers.
Draw Big Crowd
A crowd of 52,993 at Los An
geles Monday night saw Cepeda's;
12th homer of the season snap a;
3-3 tie in the eighth. Bailey's two
run homer featured a three-run
clinching outburst in the ninth as
Don Larsen picked up his first
win and Ron Pcrranoski suffered
his second defeat.
Willie McCovey also homered
and Willie Mays had three hits in
the Giants' 12-hit attack while
Maury Wills, John Roscboro and
Dick Traccwski had two hits cacn
for tlie Dodgers, whose National
League lead over the idle St. Louis
Cardinals was cut to two percen

The victory moved uie iiianisi

seventh-inning homer was the de

BEND The Klamath Falcons
played their finest defensive game
of the season Monday night and
just scrambled by the pesky Bend
American Legion team, 1-0, in
a non-league game.
"If we played defensive ball like
we did against Bend in every
game, no one could beat us,
said Coach John Paxton alter the
game. "The kids sure played a
great ball game. They really
came up with some fine plays
and some of them at the right
time, he continued.
It was the fifth victory against
one defeat for the rugged Fal
cons. Rich Grow went the distance
for the Falcons and twirled a
neat four-hit game in the route.
He struck out only one and
walked four. The Falcons handled
the lall on the ground 19 times
and made only one error in tlie
game.
The Falcons doubled the hilling
of Bend wilh eight hits, but only
the one run. "We are fielding
well now but we can't move tlie
runners around." Paxton said.
The lone Falcon run came in the
third inning with two away. Dave
Johnson led off with a single and
Grow struck out. Shortstop LeVoy
Young drew a walk and moved
to second when Johnson was
chopped down on Larry Binney's
fielder s choice. Young scampered
11 the way home on a single
by John Parisotto, Falcon hot-
corner man, who had three hits
in four trips in the game.
Grow didn t get into any real
trouble until the third when run
ners reached third base tw ice.
But superb fielding plays c u t
them down at home plate, one of
which upended catcher Jay Pax
ton. He didn't have much trou
ble again until the seventh when!
shortstop Jerry Wetle slammed a
triple with only one out. But Grow
got the pitcher Mike Metke to
ground out as the runner was held.
The leadoff man ground out to
third to end the inning and threat.
The Falcons got runners to scc-l
ond several times without being
able to advance them. They
didn't get another runner in scor
ing position until tne sevemn.
Parisotto singled but was cut
down at second. With two out John
Gray doubled but died mere.
Parisotto' got three of the eight!
Falcon hits. Gray had the double!
and the olher four hits were scat
tered sincles by LcVoy Young
Larry Binney, Jay Paxton and
Johnson.
The Falcons will take on tlie
Tri-City Gems in a league game
Wednesday night at Gem Stadi

undecided about his starter. He
will go w ith Gary Benson or Rich
