OFFERS LOAN AMENDMENT
WASHINGTON (UI'lP - Rep.

Telegraphers at Black Butte are
in touch with every freight and
passenger tram to keep
formed on their movements with
the train dispatchers.
But folks who work at Black
Butte leave there carrying the
belief that their duty is chiefly
to prevent rolling stock from be
coming lost through the w I n d
storms which sweep down from
tlie slopes of Ml. Shasta and
scatter out among the lava rocks
surrounding the station.
Some of the windy stories thev
tell are different to believe, but
railway records bear them out.
One box car was overturned
while moving, connecting with
cars on cither end, and its roof
was blown completely off. Thel
incident occurred at Dry Can
yon, not far from Weed.
Tills did happen, according to
Vernon Holderman, resident sig
nal maintenance foreman there
for 17 years, lie also stated that
snow falls while wind blows at
such velocities. He added he had
seen temperatures there drop
low witn both wind and snow go
ing at a terrific rate.
However, all claim that during
summer months, with a cooling

location. Black Butte is enticing.
Few summer visitors are wel
comed, but those who know an
employe who lives in a company
nouse mere may get an invita
lion. Otherwise one goes there
at his own risk. There is a sign
above the only parking place for
cars at Black Butte that one
must not park tlicre. The spot is
reserved for the school bus.
Do not get the impression that
this unusual railway station, re
sembling railway stations so lit
tle, is a remote spot. It is about
a mile off U.S. Highway 9a, some
three miles from Weed, and
about a half dozen miles from
Mount Shasta.
