The woman who cared faith
fully for the ailing first child and
only son of 6amuel Langhornel
Clemens (Mark Twain), from
birth until the child died at 39
months, lies buried in the old
Linkville Cemetery in Klamath

There are a few persons atill
living here who recall the gentle
woman who nursed the premature

"fine neighbor, a good wife, un

It was Mrs. George (Minnie!
Grizzle, Klamath Falls pioneer,,
who did the research among pio
neer friends to produce the infor
mation on the years that Emaline
Gift O'Brien lived In Klamath
County, and it was Mrs. Grizzle
who sold the headstone that marks
her grave.
Emaline Gift became the wue
of a Klamath County rancher,
Henry J. O'Brien, when she had
"long been a apinster," and so
proud was he of her association
with the Clemens family, that he
had carved into the granite mark
er, the line, "Nursed Mark
Twain's first child."
A heavy wire fence encloses the
grave.
