HOLLYWOOD lUPD Eric1
Fleming, star of television's "Raw
hide" series, has come a long way
in the world from his lowly be
ginnings as an errand boy.
Still not sure that success and
fame are his. Fleming, at 36.
lives meagerly in a converted
garage in the Hollywood hills.
A bachelor, the big. raw-boned
western star says: "I've lived out
of a paper hag all my life, and
I'm staying footloose. This acting
husiness is liable to blow up on
me anytime."
Self-supporting since he was a
12-vear-old. Eric is a quiet almost
secretive man who stays lo him
self. He says he never got mar
ried because when he had the
time he didn't have the money.
Now Hut he has the money he
doesn't have the time.
Flut his single life goes deeper
than that.
He says, "To me marriage
means family, and I had a bad
time as a child with a family
that didn't have much bread."
Had Many Hardships
t'ntil he clicked in the CBS-TV
show Fleming lived a hand-to-
mouth existence. He worked and
drifted across the country going
from stale to state looking for
jobs. He worked as a newsboy at
the age of nine lo help support
his parents.
At 12 he was an errand Ihiv
He also worked as a dish washer
short-order cook and a busbny
which accounts for the fact that
he never cooks in his tiny kitchen
He saves his money carefully,
remembering days when a buck
was hard to come by.
His only extravagance is eating
in top-flight restaurants. Even this
sometimes pinches his conscience
and he reverts to hamburger-
stand dining He sometimes dates,
but not nlten too expensive.
Eric drives a compact car. h
only real possession. His wardrobe
is modest and he rents the con
verted garace so that he can pack1
and be nut of town on a moment's
notice without having to fret about
a lot of possessions.

Likes Free Recreation
Fleming's recreational activities
are of an inexpensive nature, loo
He plavs tennis on the public
ourts. He swims and skin dives
in the ocean. Fishing and skiing
all free are his other pur
uits.
"I have a business manager
who tykes care of my finances.'
Fleming says. 'He keeps me on
an allowance which makes me feel
foolish. I've supported myself all
my life and now I have to ask
for money like a kid. I spend
monev on some luxuries like
on a lnc seat in the movies in
stead of sitting in the peanut gal
lery. "
He willingly admits lo bein
something of a recluse.
On occasion he shocks passers
hv on Los Angeles streets. He
strides around in sports shirts
blue jeans and without shoes.
Many an actor purposely poses as
a character. Fleming is one.
"I guess I'm a lot like the guy
I play on the series. (Jil Favor,"
Fleming admils. "He's footloose
and impatient to be on the move
ton."
A native of Santa Paula. Calif..
Fleming is itching to move on
from Ilnllyuood. His stop here rep
resents a long, long stay in one
place to him.
Has No Roots
"1 dnn't have any roots and I
don't want any." he says.
Fleming will stay with "Raw
hide" until it folds, which it must
one day, and then leave acting
behind.
"As much as I Ioe show busi
ness." he says, "it's been a Ion a1
run for me. When the show t,
through I plan to move onto
other, more interesting things."
When he won the part in the
show Fleming was en route
through Hollywood to the South
Seas where he had hoped to trv
his hand at writing and oceano-
graphv. He says these are the
things he reai.y cares for, not
acting.
Rut his hitch as a performer
has eaed his lifelong case of the
financial shorts.
He reasons that the South Paci
fie wtil free him of the rat race
and the struggle to survive status
wise with pluh homes, automo
biles and wardrobes.
Meanwhile, Eric works 12 to U
hours a day. and looks forward
