Lawmakers Work Out
Hail Fund Compromise
WASHINGTON l'PI)-Rep. J.
Vaughan Gary, D-Va., and Sen.
A. Willis Robertson, D-Va., have
met, smiled, conferred, and, with
the help of several other House
and Senate members, worked out
a compromise which means:
Saturday mail deliveries, al
legedly imperiled in a congres
sional economy drive, will not be
shut off or curtailed.
The congressional money ma
chine, which broke down last year
with results more comic than
tragic, is greased, oiled, and
ready to grind out the billions
again.
What Gary, Robertson and Co.
agreed on at their Alphonse and
Gaston performance Tuesday was
an appropriation of $6 billion to
run the Post Office and Treasury
departments in the 12 months
r starting July 1. To the relief of
all concerned, their talks were un
marred by the slightest unpleas
antness. It is not that Gary and Rob
ertson aren't Southern gentlemen
and the best of old friends. But
they happen to be chairmen of
House and Senate appropriations
subcommittees handling funds for
the Treasury and Post Office de
partments. Last year their subcommittees
were the first to collide in a test
of strength between House and
Senate check writers that tied up
all money bills until almost the
end of the session.
The squabble, in which neither
Gary nor Robertson had any real
role, was over which committee's
members would walk to the other
side of the Capitol for compromise
talks to iron out differences in
Senate, and House appropriations
bills.
Again this year. Treasury-Post
Office was the first regular money
bill of the session. Successful con
clusion of the Treasury-Post Of
fice conference talks demon
strated that the truce which end
ed last year's protocol squabble
still is intact.

danger that two U.S. Mt. Everest
climbers, Barry Bishop and Wil
liam F. Unsocld, might face am
putation of their frostbitten toes
was lessened, it was reported
here today.
A spokesman for the National
Geographic Society, a chief spon
sor of the expedition, said latest
information from Katmandu was
"there are no plans to operate."
He said both men have regained
feeling in their toes and "this is
an encouraging sign."
Bishop, a resident of Washing
ton, D.C., and Unsoeld, of Corval-
lis, Ore., sulfered severe frostbite
after reaching the top of Everest
They had to be carried piggy-back
from the summit and airlifted by
helicopter to Katmandu for hospi
tal treatment.

Cyclone Rips Pakistan
Investigators Say Sugar Prices To Start Downturn
WASHINGTON' (UPI )-Agricul-
ture Department spokesmen told
Senate investigators today that
the tide has turned" in the sugar
squeeze and prices should start
coming down.
Both Undersecretary Charles S.
Murphy and Lawrence Meyer,
head of the department's sugar
division, predicted that the crisis
which saw prices skyrocket is
over.
The witnesses, appearing before
a Senate finance subcommittee.
denied an accusation by Chair
man llairv V Bvrd. D-Va.. that
the department showed a "lack
of concern over the price rise.

since last Friday. Murphy blamed
two bad crop years in Western
Europe and loss of Cuban pro
duction to the free world for the

DACCA, East Pakistan (UPI
A vicious cyclone with winds up
to 140 miles an hour smashed
across 5,000 square miles of the
East Pakistan coast today, killing
an estimated 1.000 persons and
causing tremendous property
damage.
First sketchy reports indicated
that wooden houses and huts in
the region were destroyed by the
thousands.
Telephone poles were uprooted
by tlie winds. All communications
between the city of Dacca, capi
tal of East Pakistan near the
Bay of Bengal, were cut off.
Commercial airline pilots asked
to check the disaster area were
unable to land because of flood-
waters that swept over airport
runways in tlie path of tlie storm.
The control tower at Dacca air
port failed in all efforts to con
tact the city of Chittagong by ra
dio. Chittagong is in tlie center
of the cyclone-struck area.
Telegraph wires between Dac
ca and Chittagong also were re
ported to be useless.
