WASHINGTON (UPII - A high
space agency official says the
United States will strive to put
a man on the moon by 1970 re
gardless of what the Soviet Union
may do.
Dr. Robert C. Seamans, asso
ciate administrator of the Nation
al Aeronautics and Space Admin
istration i NASA I, also said it "ap
pears unlikely" there will be an
other Project Mercury flight.
Seamans made the statements
in an interview as eight promi
nent scientists strongly endorsed
the U.S. project to put a man
on the moon. They said it would
make an important contribution
to the future welfare and security
oi tne united States.
TAKES OWN BODYGUARD Mailman Ken Lincicome,

the main post office after being attacked by dogs along
his route, finally drew the line and took his own dog,
Schann, a German shepherd, along. On Ken's day off, his

After South's opening no-trump
bid, North might well have tried
to find a 4-4 fit in one of the
red suits, but North counted 17
points and simply jumped right to
tlx no-trump.
South was not at all happy
when he looked at the dummy.
He could only count to U tricks
and the only play for a 12th would
have to be a squeeze.
If you need a squeeze to make
12 tricks the first thing to do
is to set it up so South let West
hold the first spade. He won the
second spade and noted that East
had to discard. Then he started
on his four heart tricks and when
East had to discard on the sec
ond heart South recognized a
sure squeeze situation.
West had started with six
spades and four hearts. That left
him only three cards in the
minor suits and if anyone was
poing to stop them it had to be
East. Furthermore, when the
fourth heart was led East would
' be down to seven cards.
It would be Impossible for him
to hold stoppers in both minor
suits and all South had to do
was to watch the fall of the cards
and see whether his fourth cluh
or dummy's fourth diamond would
be the 12th trick.

WASHINGTON (UPI - The Su
preme Court today ordered Mem
phis immediately to begin desegre
gating its parks, libraries and!
museums. It also said in strong
language that southern communi
ties are moving too slowly in in
tegrating their schools.
The unanimous decision rejected
a Memphis proposal for gradually
opening its park and recreation
facilities to whites and Negroes
alike. The city claimed this was;
permissible under the "all deliber
ate speed" doctrine set out by the
court in its keystone 1955 school
edict.
Speaking for the court. Justice
Arthur J. Goldberg held that con
stitutional rights of Negroes were
being violated by tile delay and
that desegregation should be start
ed "promptly."
Goldberg then used the Memphis
case as a springboard to prod
states which maintain segregated
schools on the theory that inte
gration can be achieved gradually
under the "deliberate speed policy.
He said the high court in using
those words in its 1935 decision
"never contemplated" that they
would allow "indefinite delay in
elimination of racial barriers in
schools."

Army Offers
Special Plan
To Graduates
A new program which will en
able young men between the
ages of 17 and 18'j to fulfill
their military obligations with six
months of active duty and three
years of active reserve is avail
able to high school graduates
in the Basin by joining Company
H. U.S. Army Reserve.
The abbreviated program will
appeal to young men who want
to plan for college or other train
ing beyond high school. Capt.
Jack Moebius, Company H com
mander, said.
A man is able to complete his
active military service before he
graduates and can plan for the
future with no further interrup
tions by the armed forces, bar
ring war. Captain Moebius said.
Under the program an enlistee
will report (or six months of ac
tive duty at Fort Ord, Calif., aft
er high school graduation. He
then returns to his home reserve
company or a unit where he
chooses to attend school. During
this time he will attend a two-
hour drill every week along with
two weeks of summer training for
a period of three years.

The scientists took issue with
criticism of the Apollo moon pro
gram voiced by some of their
colleagues. They said they re
garded as invalid rharpps thnt
the program had no scientific
value.
