Central Point Wins Second Game No Counter 7-4
The Klamath Falls Falcons.
American Legion team, opened
its season on a high note Sunday
at Gem Stadium as Gary Ben
son spun a no-hitter to lead his
team to a 4-1 victory over Cen
tral Toint.
It was the first of a double-
header and the only game of the
two that counts in the standings.
Central Point took the second
game 7-4.
Benson permitted only four men
to get on base in the first
six innings and opened the sev
enth and last frame by striking
out Darrell Summerfield, Central
Point catcher. Kightfielder Willie
Jones then grounded out Benson
to John Gray at first.
He handed out his fifth base on
balls at this point, to Wayne Clay,
pitcher. Bob Stroth, first baseman,
hit one that was bobbled by sec
ond baseman Lanny Guyer. per
mitting Clay to score his team's
only run. Stroth wound up at third
when Dave Twedell, centerfield-
was hit by one of Benson's
pitches, but Benson then buckled
down and struck out Bob Corliss
to retire the side and rack up
the win, a no-hitter. although los-
his no-hit. no-run game.
Benson helped his own cause
with a triple in the sixth inning,
but died on third.
The Falcons struck for all four
of their runs in the third inning.
After Levov Young had ground
ed out and Guyer struck out.
Clav walked Dave Johnson, and
Mike Kitching was safe on an er
ror at first. Then back to back
doubles by John Gray and Pari-
sotto accounted for three of the
runs. Paxton poled out a single
to score the fourth run and wind
up the scoring.
Benson struck out seven in vic
tory, and Clay whiffed the samel
number in his losing effort.
The second game was a dif
ferent story as the hitters went
to work. Central Point opened
tl.e first inning wiui a two run
barrage off Jim Jackson. Tlic Fal
cons came back for three runs in
the bottom of the same frame,
paced by triples by Guyer and
Dave Johnson.
Central Point tied it up in the
second, and then put the game
away with a three run outburst in
the third, paced by a triple by
Anhorn.
The Falcons could muster only
another single run in the fourth,
that by Larry Smith as Larry
Pepper kept them under control,
scattering six hits.

League teams opened play Sat-
uiday with a jamboree at Mills
Little League Park for both ma
jor and minor teams.
Eastsirie and Bend-Portland
both scored victories in the two
inning games, Eastside topping
Hal's 6-2. and Ben d-Portland
downing Jeld-Wen 6-0. Gene's and
Weyerhaeuser played to a score
less tie.
In the minors. Crater Lake
whipped Coca Cola 7 0, while Ki
wanis was nipping iMotor Invest
ment 3-2. and Weyerhaeuser -Gene's
defeated Thomas Dodge
8-1.
A barrage of singles and
two-man pitching job netted the
Klamath Mcdo-Bels a 4-2 victory
at Weed Sunday in a practice
game, the first of the season lor
either club.
Both of these entries in the
Northern California League struck
for runs in the opening frame as
Hon Owings siimled home John
Bianchi for the Mcdo-Bels. Weed
however, struck back with two
runs in the bottom of the initial
inning to take a 2-1 edge.
That was all the scoring for
Weed though, as Jim Keller
shut them out for the balance of
the first three frames, and Bill
Mansfield came on to hurl air
tiRht ball over the last six in
nings.
The Mcdo-Bels tied the game upl
in the filth and it remained that
way going into the ninth. Two
big runs for the visitors gave
the Mcdo-Bels their victory. 4-2
Blake Griggs was top hitter for
the Medo-Bcls with four for four.
Bob Yunck added a pair of dou
blcs for the only extra - base
efforts of tlie locals.
Weed returns the honors on
Thursday of this week at 2 p.m.
when they come to Gem Stadium
to tangle with the Mcdo-Bels in
another practice session.
Hi Hatfield, president of the
league, listed the official sched
ule Monday, showing that the
Medo-Bcls will open the season
Saturday night at Gem Stadium
at 8 p.m. when they play host to
Scott Valley.
