Lynch likes to quip that when
he's tapped for pinch-hitting duty
"I leave the dugout swinging."
With that in mind, the Pitts
burgh Pirates reacquired the 32
year old outfielder Thursday in a
straight swap for veteran Bob
Skinner, with w hom he broke into
the majors in 1954.
The Pirates, with one of their
weakest hitting teams in years,
plucked Lynch from the Cincinna
ti Reds where the 32-year-old
lefthander developed into one of
baseball's most feared pinch-hit
ters.
Lynch has cracked 13 home
runs in the pinch, one short of
the major league record held by
George Crowe.
Lynch has a season hatting
average of .250 on eight hits in
32 at baLs. He has appeared as
a pinch-hitter 13 times, connect
ing for three hits, two of them
homers.
Skinner, a regular with the Pi
rates for the past eight seasons,
was batting .270 this year with
no home runs and eight runs hat
ted in. He and Lynch joined Pitts
burgh as rookies in 1954 but
Lynch later was farmed to Holly
wood of the Pacific Coast
League and drafted by the Reds.

was pleased to play for Stengel.
At least I know Casey wants

two All-Star teams and in 1953
when I was playing right field
for Boston, Stengel called me the
best outfielder he'd ever seen. It
sort of helped me off the ground
as a ballplayer.
Piersall has battled with um
pires, teammates, rivals, fans and
sportswriters over the years but
