Soaring Sugar Prices Forecast End Of Nickel Candy Bar

Sugar prices soared in stores
across the nation today in what
could eventually mean an end to
the five-cent candy bar.
"We don't know where it will
stop." said one chain store offi
cial in Dallas. Tex., as the price
of sugar climbed to 69 cents for
five pounds.
In many cities, housewives
streamed lo markets to stock up
on sugar.
The hike in prices and the
run on sugar seemed to in
volve a complicated world situa'
lion that was beyond the under
standing of many homcmakers
caught up in the effects.
The cause of the shortage was
crop failure last year in many
sugar producing countries, plus

some labor trouble in Hawaii
The disappearance of Cuba's sue
ar from the Western market also
was a factor, but Cuba also had
crop failure last year.
A wholesaler in lies Moines,
Iowa, said the climbing prices
would also affect beverages,
canned goods and other items on
shopping lists. The higher prices
eventually could mean the end of
the five-cent candy bar, too, he
said, "unless it's the size of your
thumbnail."

Corp., listed three prime reasons
for the world shortage of sugar
the Cubans had a small crop be
cause of poor management, two
very poor winters in Europe
caused poor harvests, and the so-
called underdeveloped countries
have become more prosperous
and are increasing their trade de
mands.
Rising raw sugar prices in New
York touched off a spurt in the
sale of Hawaii sugar agency
stocks with gains ranging from $3
to as much as $10 a share. It
was one of the most active trad
ing davs 6ince 1959.

shortage or the progress of the

He said the United States has
all the sugar needed for current
consumption. He said that when
a hoarding movement begins,
there is no way to tell how far
it would go.
Market experts in New York
said the world-wide shortage
would exist at least until sugar
beet crops are harvested in both
the united Mates and Europe in
October.

stroyed her home only a few
months ago. She told of the fright-;
cning experience of having to
rush out of her flame-engulfed
home and of not having been able
to save anything except a few
personal mementos. She ex
plained that Anthony, her hus
band, had sulfcred third degree
burns over much of his body
while attempting to locate one ol
the children he thought still in1

considerable time in a hospital,
three weeks of this lime on the
critical list.
Mrs. Adams said, "I would like

food and I would like some,
clothes for Duflie. He will soon
be returning to work, full time,
and will need a few things. Ev
erything we had went up In
smoke."
After her coronation, her wish
was immediately granted by!
Bailey. He assured her that "her
cupboard would be stocked with,
food and Duffie will have some
new clothes." In addition as an
added reward. Bailey said, "You
and your husband are in for a

After the program Mrs. Adams
told interviewers that her trip to
Hollywood was a "one-time af
fair." She traveled by bus from
her home lo the Los Angeles
area, stayed overnight in a hotel.

ticket number was No. 97." she
said. "I'll never forget thai."
Duffie is employed by Ihe Unit-
led California Bank in Dorris. He
is now working part-time at the
bank, still recuperating Irom his
njurics. The Adams children.

months, stayed with friends
while their mother traveled to
Hollywood.
Mrs. Adams was born in San
Diego, and Dulfie was born in
Klamath Falls. They both at
tended high school in Myrtle
Point. Last January. Queen
Louise was an entrant in the
"Sew it yourself with Wool" con
test sponsored by the American
Woolgrowers Association. Earlier,
she had been declared a winner
from the Red Bluff District
Her mother and father, Carl and.
Dorothy Nelson, are Halfway,
Ore., residents. Mrs. Nelsonl
teaches in the Halfway High
School home economics depart
ment.
Northern California has been
Mrs. Adams' home for most of
her life. She was employed for'
many months as a waitress at

Dear Readers: I had no idea
there were so many noisy eaters
in the world. It seems every fam
ily has one and I must have
heard from them ail.
The majority ol people who!
wrote did not like my advice. I
told a 16-year-old girl I knew of
no polite way to tell a father his
table manners are atrocious and
lo cut down on the noise.
You readers informed me that
there ware a variety of ways to,
tell the old man lo quiet down,
and you offered suggestions. The
ideas ranged all the way from,
"Please, father, if you don't mind
can you cat a bit more quietly?"
to "For Pete's sake, pa, shut
up with the slurping and chew
ing already. You're making me
deaf."
Some parents said they wel
come criticism from their chil
dren. One mother wrote. "Every
member of the family should be
free to speak up about things
that bother him. It's the demo
cratic way."
Young people who are ashamed
of their parents are in a terrible
spot, Ann. How do you suppose
a 16-year-old girl feels in public
or at the home ol a Inend
when her father eats like a pig?
He puts her in an unfavorable
light as well as himself."
It would be ideal if the emo
tional climate in ail homes en
couraged every member of the
family to speak freely about mat
ters that bothered him. Unhappi
ly, the millenium has not arrived.
The girl who complained about

Kids know when criticism is
unwanted. They only create prob
lems for themselves by suggest
ing to a hostile parent that he
improve his table manners. So
my advice stands. Any teen-ager
who has to enlist the help of Ann
Landers to get a slob of a father
to stop eating like a pig is fight
ing a lost cause.
