Finance Chief Mum
About Debt Ceiling
WASHINGTON iL'Pl" - Sen.
Harry F. Byrd. D-Va.. said today
he has not decided what stand to
take on President Kennedy's stop,
gap proposal to raise the national
debt ceiling to MM billion.
Byrd, chairman of the Senate
Finance Committee and a .staunch
economy advueate-. said he was
"very doubtful" about another
hike of the debt limit, but had not
decided whether to oppose it.
The 75-ycar-old senator said he
would wait until Treasury Secre
tary Douglas Dillon brings his
case to the finance committee be.
fore making a decision. Dillon
testifies Thursday.
The House passed the bill to
bring the limit to the record high
of $309 billion during July and
August. Republicans voted almost
solidly against it. The Senate, how
ever, is expected to approve the
bill with little difficulty.
There were indications that the
finance committee would hear on
ly Dillon and then clear the meas
ure for Senate action without
change. Senate Democratic lead
er Mike Mansfield. Mont., said it
would be taken up on the floor
Monday.

seemed confident the Senate-
approved bill would clear the

was Al Blackburn, who resigned

Sale Of Buck Lake Timber Scheduled By BLM

board feet of pine, fir and cedar
timber located about four miles
south of Buck Lake in Klamath
County will be sold during an
oral auction sale. 9:30 a.m., Thurs
day. June 13, at the Bureau of
Land Management warehouse
area. Armory Drive in 'Medtord,
the BLM has announced.
At the same time and place.
bids will also be received for
about 565 million board feet of
the same species of timber which
was blowdow n in various parts of
Jackson and Klamath counties
since last winter.
In the latter sale, the success
ful bidder will be required to cut
and remove the logs within six
months following the awarding of
the contract. Nearly 97 per cent
of the estimated sale volume con
sists of recent windthrow. snags
and other dead or damaged trees.
Approximately 2.9 per cent of
the estimated sale volume con
sists of logs cut and decked along
the road leading into the BLM
Surveyor Recreation site in Sec.
21, T MS. R5E. The average log
contains 229 board feet.
