Disastrous Forest Fire
Season Faced In Oregon
SALEM (UPH The closed fire
season begins Friday in all of
Western Oregon, and In most of
Eastern Oregon, as a prelude to
what could become one of the
most disastrous forest fire years
in the state's history.

The 13 fire season closure in
(he portions of Klamath County
1 -protected by Klamath Forest
"Protective Association, Fremont
t 1 National Forest and Winema Na
tional Forest was effective as of
midnight May 20. This date was
established by a proclamation is
sued by Governor Hatfield May
15.
In the closure area burning
permits are now required for open
burning within one-eighth mile of
forest and brush land. (Permits
can be obtained at all offices of
KFPA and at district ranger sta
tions. They are not available at
the office of the forest supervisor
on Mam Street.
Forest officers join KFPA in
urging all forest users to be care
ful with fire. After a long wet
spring, the woods are now dry
ing out rapidly. Fishermen are
cautioned to put out campfires
(horoughly, lest they smolder
through (lie damp parts of the
day, then come to life and spread
into the timber during the heat
of the day.
Winnemucca Route
Designation Sought
The Winnemucca - to the - Sea
Highway Association was today
continuing its efforts to obtain a
one-number designation for the
route linking Crescent City, Calif.,
with Winnemucca, Nov., it be
came known following the annu
al meeting of the association In
Klamath Falls.
Members of the association also
agreed to attend the opening of
tlie Randolph Collier tunnel, south
of the state line on Highway 199,
which will be dedicated as part
of the Winnemucca to tlie Sea
Highway, 2 p.m., Saturday, July
20.
The day before the dedication
Fred L. Picrson of Grants Pass
told the association that he would
head a car caravan proceeding
from Winnemucca to the dedica
tion site. The motorcade will
make brief meal stops in Klam
ath Falls and Grants Pass. Peo
ple desiring to accompany the
group may Join tlie caravan at
Lakeview or in this city.

In Eastern Oregon the only
areas not included in the fire sea
son declaration were Baker, Urna
tilla and Wallowa counties, and
the Vale-Burns grazing district in
Malheur and Harney counties.
Throughout the rest of Oregon
burning permits will be required,
and extreme caution will be ex
ercised in an effort to avoid dis
aster.
Stale Forester Dwlght Phipps
said more than $8 million is avail
able this season for forest pro
tection.
About 15.7 million acres of for
est land are administered by the
State Forestry Department and
cooperating forest protection as
sociations, Phipps said.
Phipps explained nearly $4 mil
lion has been currently budgeted.
$1.8 million is in emergency fire
fighting funds, and $2.5 million is
expected to be spent by private
forest landowners for fire hazard
reduction.
Two problems threaten to add
to the fire danger this year
blowdown from the Columbus Dayi
storm, and below normal snow
pack in the mountains.
There will be more fuel for
fires, and the ground will dry
faster so that undergrowth will
become more flammable.
Forest fire control, under the
direction of the state forester, is
accomplished through 14 forest
protection districts. Six are ad
ministered directly by the State
Forestry Department, and eight!
have been organized by private
landowners, and operate under
contract with the state forester
ation agreed to prepare leaflets
showing the mileage from point
to point along tlie highway and
will arrange to distribute them
tlirough service stations and mo
tels along the new route.
Judge Jim Ogle of Lakeview
reported that the Lake County
Chamber of Commerce had
set aside 11.2(10 to finance the
establishment of advertising signs
along the Winnemucca route.
