Pilot Dies
In Crackup
THE DALLES (UPl-One man
lost his life and another was criti
cally injured when their light
plane crashed about 10 miles
southwest of here Friday after
noon. Killed was John Gene Smith, 28.
The Dalles, a passenger in the
aircraft. (Marquis H. Wollenweber,
42, also' of The Dalles and the
piiot of the plane, was taken io a ;
Portland hcspual.
The plane was owned by
Smith's brother, Ivan Smith of
The Dalles.
It crashed on a gravel road
near Chenowith Creek after tak
ing off earlier in the afternoon
from the Chenowith Airpark. It
.slammed into a bank and lipped
upside down on the roadway.
Witnesses reported that the
plane made a pass at a field as
if to land and then crashed.
