criminal, stood in the dock await
ing his trial for stealing a small
slam against Lord West and Sir
Raymond East.
It seemed like an open and shut
case as the prosecution proved
conclusively that the Professor,
silting North, had bid three
spades to show control of that
suit wlien really he was void of
clubs and by so doing had In
duced Lord West to open the king
of clubs, not the king of spades
against the final six heart con
tract. The Professor called but one
witness and a stir went through
the courtroom when everyone saw
that his one witness was the
master detective, Sherlock
Holmes.
Upon being duly sworn the
great detective explained that the
real criminal was Sir Raymond.
Holmes pointed out that Sir Ray
mond should have bid four clubs
over the Professor's three
spades. In Holmes' words, "Lord
West had 6hown a very strong
two-euit hand and four clubs could
not be hurt. Then If the Professor
had still gone to six hearts Lord
West should have been able to
deduce that the Professor was up
to one of his well known tricks
and opened the king of spades."
As the spectators burst into
cheers Holmes turned to the Pro
fessor and remarked, "You must
be slipping. The old Moriarity
would have bid seven hearts and
picked up a grand slam."

Service, Soil Conservation Serv
ice, and Vocational Agriculture
met Jlay 2 in the U.S. Post Of
fice Building, Lakeview.
The purpose of the meeting
was to discuss the feasibility of
obtaining practical information on
crop varieties and fertilizer rec
ommendations for use in Goose
Lake Valley. The committee se
lected Orla Shullanberger to act
as chairman for the coming year.
The objectives of the commit
tee are twofold. One is to secure
practical information relative to
crop varieties and fertilizer uses
for the Goose Lake Valley. It
was felt that this information
could be obtained through trial
scedings and fertilizer applica
tions. Tiie second is to compile
the information obtained into a
report form to be made available
to the farmers and ranchers.
The committee outlined i t s
plans for this year which in
clude setting up nitrogen strip
trials on native meadow land
this spring; compiling informa
tion from a Gaines wheat and
safflower trials already under
