Haltie Cooper whiled away the
hours Saturday, confident all will
po well when her son, L. Gordon
Cooper Jr., becomes America's
next man in space.
Cooper is scheduled to make a
22-orbit flight Tuesday. His flight,
if all goes according to schedule,
w ill be the longest any American
has tried. If he makes all 22 or
bits. Cooper will not land until the
next day.
"I feel Gordon knows what he's
doing," Mrs. Cooper said. "I think
lie will lie relieved to get up and
out. I know these last days must
be trying."
Mrs. Cooper, wire lives in Car
bnndalo, Colo., is staying with her
mother, Mrs. Orena Herd, in Tc
cumseh. a small community five
miles south of Shawnee in central
Oklahoma. As far as she knows
now. she will be there when her
son blasts off from Cape Canave
ral, following the flight closely
over television.
Not Worried
' I am very happy he has t h e

she said as she paused during a
garage repairing chore behind her
mother's house. "He is so excit
ed and anxious."

the astronaut program when he
first heard about it.
"He said, there's something Gor
don would be interested in," she
said. "Soon a letter came from
Gordon, saying he was going to

Adam Clayton Powell, D-N.Y.:

"No," he replied. "Not at all."
A bland indifference to notori
ety is one of the uncommon traits
that have made Powell the most
talked-about member of the 88th
Congress.
Not since the heyday of the
late Sen. Joseph H. .McCarthy.
R-isM has a lawmaker managed
to stir up so much controversy
as Powell,
The urbane, 54-year-old Negro
leader has outraged some Amer
icans and delighted others, by
zestfully pursuing the rarely com
bined careers of playboy, preach
er and politician.
Disregards Convention
His genius tor trampling on
conventional ideas of how a min
ister end-or a congressman should
behave has been expressed in a

Item: He has hung a sign on
the door of his congressional of

and ensconced her in a $70,000

When criticized for all of this, he

al session for a month-long tour
of Europe, accompanied by two

of his staff, all of them traveling
on government funds. When asked
whether it was proer for him to

evidently find no fault with Adam
Clayton Powell. They are the Ne
gro and Puerto Kican voters of
the IMh Congressional District of
New York who have elected him
