Tests Scheduled To Find
Cause In Lipscomb Death
BALTIMORE. Md. IIIPH- Po
lice Capt. Joseph Carroll said
Saturday night that the compan
ion of Gene (Big Daddyl Lips
comb has told him that Lipscomb
took a shot of heroin several
hours before his death.
Lipscomb. 31, a 290-pound pro
football alar famed for his
strength, died early Friday after
being found unconscious in the
home of a friend, Timothy Black
A medical examiner said the
"presumption" was that Lips
comb died ai a result of "an
overdose of narcotics."
Carroll, of the narcotics squad,
said Saturday night Black told
him he bought a "bag" of heroin
for $12 at abo.it 4 a m. Friday.
"Black said they went back to
Black's house on Krice Street and
cooked up the heroin, splitting it
evenly." Carroll said. "Black said
Lipscomb then shot his into his
own arm."
Carroll said Biack told him he
then prepared to take his own
shot, "but the needle stuck and
he had to lake a wire to open
it."
"When he was ready." Carroll
said. "Black said he noticed Lips
comb was drooling from the
mouth and was unconscious
Black said he slapped him in an
attempt to wake him up."
Carroll said Biack also tried to
arouse Lipscomb by packing him
in ice.
The police captain said Black
and another man, whom he did
not identily, then tried to revive
the Pittsburgh Steelers star by
dissolving table salt in water and
shooting it inti Big Daddy's arm.
It was ."an hour or so" after
that. Carroll said Black told him.

rested on charges of possession
of narcotics paraphernalia, that
is, the syringe.
Friends of Lipscomb, including
former pro football star Claude
i Buddy) Young and officials of
the Pittsburgh team, expressed
doubt that Lipscomb would have
anything to do with narcotics, es
pecially because he disliked
"needles.'
Big Daddy's body was reported
to bear puncture marks above
veins on both arms. A syringe.
described as "makeshift" by Dr.
Breitenaackcr, was found in a
waste basket In the kitchen. A
preliminary test of the syringe
for narcotics ptoved negative but
further tests aie being conducted.
Former Teammates Awed
Lipscomb's body was identified
by several of his former Colt
teammates, none of whom could
believe he ever used narcotics.
Dr. Ray Sweeney, the Steelers'
trainer, said at his home in Port
land. Maine, that Lipscomb even
refused to take novocaine once
when he was in severe pain with
a shoulder injury.
Sweeney quoted Lipscomb as
saying:
"I never had a needle in my
life. I'd rather play hurt than take
anything."
The Pittsburgh trainer said. "I
think it's impossible that Big
Daddy was involved with narcot
ics. Over the past two years I've
been very close to him. I just
don't believe this is possible."
A National Football League
spokesman said League Commis
sioner Pete Rozellc was watching
for any proof that Lipscomb might
have been involved with narcotics.

The amiable, fun-loving Lips
comb, one of the few men ever
to achieve pro football fame even
though he never attended college,
died after "partying" Thursday
night, according to Timothy Black
a friend.
Black, in whose apartment Big
Daddy was found, told police that
he and Lipscomb took two girls
to a party Thursday night. After
taking the girls home, they head
ed for Black's apartment but be
fore they arrived there. Black
said he decided to stop at a local
lunchroom for something to eat
Lipscomb went on alone to the,
apartment, the police quoted
Black, When Black reached his
apartment a short time later, he
said he found the football player
unconscious.

Bonanza's high-powered spike
troops captured the annual Class
5-B track meet at Modoc Field
Saturday but got a scare thrown
into them by the fired-up Gil-
Christ Grizzlies.
The Antlers won the meet w ith
136 points. Gilchrist came in sec
ond with 106 points to finish only
30 points behind. They were 40
points behind in the similar meet
last week.
Chiloquin poured on the steam
to take third place with 73 points.
Then came Malin with 48, Pros
pect with 24, Biy with 20, Mer
rill 17 and Paisley with 14.
Most events were according to
the form sheet. The favorites won
in most all the events with Bo
nanza's Bob Rice and Monte Bur
nett taking the lion's share of hon
ors. Rice won the 100-yard dash and
220 in times of 10.1 and 22.7 to
score his double. Burnett was
right on Rice's heels in tlie 100
for second place and he won the
440-yard dash with a clocking of
52.5.
Other Bonanza ' firsts went to
Ricky Steber in the 120-yard high
hurdles with a good time ot 15.7.
Gilchrist's Malt Koski was the
second place finisher in that
event. It was his best meet time
this year. He also finished second
the half mile to teammate
James Brothcrton who was
clocked at 2: 12 6. Steber also took
the low hurdles with a timing of
21.85. The Antler sophomore fin
ished just in front of Gilchrist's
Jack llazlewood.
Steber also got a state track
meet berth in the high jump when
he was second in the high jump
behind Chiloquin s Tony DiUlio.
The final Bonanza victory came
in the 880-yaid relay where the
Antlers clipped off a 1:37.4 vic
tory with Rice and Burnett lead
ing the charge. Malin was second.
Gilchrist started out with a win
when big Conley Elms copped the
shot put with a heave of 42-11'..
