Meddling, Lovable
Lives Quiet Life As
By VKHNON SCOTT
l!PI Hollywood Corrnpondrnt
HOLLYWOOD (UPIi-Kor the
past two years every televiewer
in the United States has had a
housemaid. Her name is Hazel.
She is nosey, meddling, o( un
even disposition and, thanks be.
altogether lovable. Off-screen in
the person of Shirley Booth, all
of Hazel's qualities disappear,
save the warm, lovable traits.
At 53. Miss Booth leads a quiet,
unique life which is far more in
teresting, though less hectic, than
Hazel s.
To begin with, she has three
homes. She leases a four room
apartment in Hollywood's very
expensive Chateau Marmont and
a five-room apartment on New
York's West 57th Street. But her
favorite borne is a summer cot
tage in Chatham, Mass., on Cape
Cod.
Miss Booth manages to live in
all three places during the year.
Three months are spent at Cape
Cod where she works furiously in
an enormous garden babying
(lowers, shrubj and trees.
She is such a nut on flowers
and plants that both her apart
ments are filled with growing
things.
"When I leave my Hollywood
apartment I distribute my plants
among my friends 1 i k e other
people do with pets," she says.
"They're reluctant to lake tliem
for fear the plants will die and
that 1 will never forgive them.'
Hal Never Remarried
Widowed in 1951 when her in
vestment broker-husband, W. H.
Baker, died. Miss Booth has
never remarr ed. She was mar
ried once previously to Ed Gard
ner of "Duffy's Tavern" fame.
A native New Yorker, Miss
Booth fills the long hours in
Hollywood knitting, puttering
around her plants and by going
for long drives in the Southern
California countryside. "1 try to
find places where there's a lot of
green grass and trees," she ex
plained. Movie Skies

Shopkeepers thrill at the sight
of Miss Booth. She leels she is
being rude if she leaves a store
without buying something.
Thus, - on infrequent shopping
murs tne actress buys wildly. But
that's fine too, because she can
afford it. S a v i n g s and invest
ments have made her financially
independent for life. She need
never work again, although re
tirement might be her undoing.
In her clear New York accent
she says: "I work because it
makes me feci better and more
interested in things. Maybe I'm
not aggressive enough to find ac
tivities to fill out my day. When
I work things are all laid out for
me like in the armv, or when
you're a child."
Despite her constant traveling
from the Cape to New York to
Hollywood, Miss Booth, a merry,
open soul, packs only one suit
case. She keeps her summer clothes
in Chatham, her casual wardrobe
in California and her smart, so
phisticated duds in New York.
Has Many Homes
"Each place is 'home' to me
and 1 keep them all in perfect
order so that, when 1 drop
in after weeks or months of ab
sence they appear as if I'd been
living in them every d a y," slie
said.
Miss Booth says she is not in
terested in remarriage nor ro
mance. She has scores of close
friends, most of whom are in
show business. Among them are
Ann Sothem, John Forsythe, the
Ralph Bellamys and Max Sho
walter. She is a frequent guest
in their homes but she rarely en
tertains. Of marriage she lays: "It's
more than a 50-50 proposition. It
should be a 100-100 proposition,
and I've become a little too self
ish to give that much of myself
to anyone else."

Miss Booth's life is not a lone

Back east a full-time secretary

There's no doubt about it. We.
pamper our youngsters too
much nowadays.
Thty ride when they should
walk. They sit when they should
be moving. They watch when
they should be participating. -And
all this inactivity is bad for
them. Indeed, most leading
heart specialists agree that to
day's inactive youngsters are
likely to be candidates later on
lor diseases ol the heart and
blood vessels, overweight, and
other disorders that feed on an
easy going existence.
What better reason Is there for"
parents to urge school officials
to strengthen physical educa
tion programs for every boy
end every girl?
Local school officials will be
responsive to your Interest Get
in touch with them.
If you would like more Informa
tion, write to The President's
Council on Physical Fitness,
